Nail Gun Vs. SWAT: Guess Who Wins?
CNN is carrying a story today about a jackass who chased his girlfriend down the street with a knife and then barricaded himself in his house. During the six-hour standoff with law enforcement, he came out once for a commando-style attack on police with — get this — a cordless nail gun. Note that the cops aren’t afraid (for themselves) or amused. Sadly I’m betting that they were more concerned about trying to shut the guy down without hurting him.
All ends well, though, as CNN reports that a combination of tear gas and pleading brought the guy out with no injuries. Check the video out for the whole deal. Personally, I wish we had audio from it so we could hear the nails plinking off the sheriff’s car.

Dude’s (Misguided) Weapon of Choice [Paslode]
Having tried to get those things to stick into foam at 10 feet I can tell you a wiffle bat would prolly make a better (and more threatening) weapon.
When nail guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have nail guns.
it’s all fun and games until someone looses an eye…
“Sadly I’m betting that they were more concerned about trying to shut the guy down without hurting him.”
Why is that sad? The guy may be a moron, a**hole, crazy, and a lot of other stuff, but I bet most cops would prefer to take a suspect without use of force, especially deadly force. It IS nice to know they are prepared for either eventuality.
The nailer might jamb less than the M16…
Sounds like an opportunity to do a bit on non-lethal law enforcement tools. A standoff like this can end much quicker without forcing the police to decide if deadly force is justified. Foam or net the suspect and wrap it up.
So… nobody got nailed in the fracas?
Mabe he was hammered?
@ChrisW: What’s sad is that they guy thinks he’s against them when I suspect they’re looking out for him. Realizing that the guy is that mixed up is kinda sad.
In one of the Lethal Weapon Movies Danny Glover kills a bad guy with a Paslode Impulse nail gun so this dim bulb was trying to do the same thing.
Looks like an ideal opportunity for a 12 gauge with bean bag cartridges.
“Mabe he was hammered?”
/rimshot
Well, he was armed with what seriously could be called a dangerous weapon…
I’m the cop???? He’s gettin’ shot.
The price of being STUPID.
I shouldn’t be surprised by it, but I am impressed by their composure. I’ve read too many stories lately that make me wonder if we escalate too quickly. Kudos to these cops to hold back on lethal force until they knew how big a threat the nailgun really was (way bigger threat to the guy holding the safety open with his hand).
They should of knocked him out with a 2X4.
@Deer Hunter: Good thing you’re not a cop, then. (At least I hope that’s true.) You don’t know until well after the situation is over whether his behavior may have been due to previously undiagnosed mental disease, a mistakenly prescribed medication, or any number of things beyond his control. Death is undoable.
@Eddie: It’s “would’ve,” not “would of.” Seriously.
I was hoping for a beanbag round to the crotch.
My framing nailer shoots a mean shot outdoors, I don’t know what kind of power are behind the nails but they go quite a way. Its air powered not the cordless/butane/propane model this guy has.
What, a criminal use of a nail gun! Obviously this was a problem just waiting to happen. Congress needs to step in for the safety of the public. New laws should be: no nail gun purchase (singular, not plural) without a contractors license, criminal background checks needed & registration. Models are to be made that a unique marking will automatically be stamped from the breach of the gun onto the nail. No nail purchases with-out said contractors license, and micro-stamping of all nails. All nailguns that can not fill these requirements will be deemed destructive devises & must be turned in to the nearest Police station. Mandatory jail time for not reporting the theft of nailguns & nails within 24 hrs of theft. All this will drastically increase the prices of nail guns & nails but contractors can always pass this cost on to the customers. All this sounds ridicules, right ? This what they are trying to do to law-abiding gun owners.
And it makes much better sense for guns, nimrod.
“If they outlaw chainsaws, only outlaws will have chainsaws”
Yeah, that sound just as stupid.
Makes no sense for Guns either Bob a tool is a tool its the fool thats running it that counts.
Joe Citizen — I agree 100% with you — during the next session of the idiots in Congress (and the poor excuse for a President) they’ll want to ban the large nail capacity in those dangerous weapons. No more than a clip under 12 nails – – –
Hopefully things will get better after the 2012 election.
Then our right to bear nailguns will be restored.
Having trouble seeing here. Can someone get all those teabags out of my face?
Depends on who’s named Brad. sd
