A Dumbbell For Your Plumbing Toolbox
If you read this site, you probably spend a lot of time wondering how they put things together, or better yet, how you’d take them apart. Take a tub drain, for instance: How do you remove the old one so you can replace it? Superior Tool makes a tub drain wrench like this dumbbell wrench to help you get the job done.
One of the the two heads will probably fit into the X-shaped part of your drain called the tub basket. To remove it, apply pressure using a screwdriver, a 3/8″ or 1/2″ ratchet with an extension, or an adjustable wrench to screw it out. The wrench can also be used to install and remove 1/2″ square plastic toilet seat nuts.
Superior Tool makes its tub drain wrench in the USA from heavy duty die-cast aluminum. Pricing starts around $10 before shipping.

My success over the years with these is that they simply break off the “cross” on the basket. However, it opens the basket for the real removal tool – for which I cannot recall the name – that is somewhat like a screw extractor except for the larger size and, of course, cheaper materials.
These 2 inexpensive tools can be what saves you from being in the crawl space trying to reach through a very small space to get that thing apart. There are those times though….
They’re crap – 80% of the time, they will not fit the standard mesh patterns in sink drains.
Great idea, but very little practical use.

sorry for the fat-fingered double post
Is the smaller end for a utility sink drain then?
Two crossed screwdrivers. Works 100% of the time (… okay, 85%).
Anybody else use a pair of needle nose pliers?
