OfficeMax has a closeout of a 100 pack of OfficeMax Precision #11 X-acto style blades for $2.50.

That’s a smoking deal, even if they are knockoffs. But we wonder how long the closeout will last. Otherwise the cheapest price we’ve seen on a 100-pack of  #11 style blades is at FLS Discount for $10.85. The #11 is the standard type of X-acto blade, pointy and sharp, though easy to snap the point off or become dull.

I went to the local Office Max and they never heard of the deal. They did have a pack of 6 for $11.96. Where is this really advertised?

  2. Kurt says:

There is a lot of variation in the quality of #11 blades. Some are so thin they are useless for cutting anything other than thin paper, and don’t hold an edge long even at that.

If you want to save money, try resharpening them instead of buying cheap bulk replacements. Micro-Mark sells a neat little fixture that holds the knife at the proper angle against a small stone, letting you touch up the blade quickly.

Sharpening cutting edges properly is a truly useful and satisfying skill, well worth taking the time to learn.

I’m with Kurt, just resharpen them. If you break them then replace them but we toss too much away in this society because we’re too lazy to fix things.

My local Office Max never heard of this, either.
