The LightLane Bike Light, shown above, is a prototype patent-pending bike light that, in addition to having standard rear-facing red LEDs, has two green lasers (shown below) projecting to the left and right of your bike giving you a visible five-foot wide, 12-foot long bike lane moving with you as you ride. Its rechargeable Li-Ion battery is said to give 3 hours of run time.

According to a Gear Junkie post, the retail price will be between $80 and $100, but the release date is unknown.

    @kyle: Because lots of people get killed on bikes all the time. Bikes really do need a little bit of room, and this does a neat job of illustrating that.

    1 major change that I would suggest though would be a red diode in the laser, rather than a green diode. Red is a better international stay out color than green IMO, and while green can burn brighter (hotter) than red, putting in a higher end red in would be just as bright, and save one battery I believe.

    I forwarded this to a few of the avid cyclists here in the office. All positive responses, they can’t wait for it to come out.

    Here in Chicago there is a 3ft law – cars cannot come within 3ft of cyclists. When this was violated 6 months ago, the guy sitting in the cubicle next to me ended up in the hospital, then in a cast until just a few weeks ago.

    Getting drivers to look out for cyclists is critical!

    Maybe it is just because of the fact that I live in the middle of nowhere but I never have seen alot of people riding bikes at night where this device would be very useful.

    In the large cities, where this might be useful, there are so many lights of various colors around that this thing would be completely invisible.

    Rob, that might be why they made it green, not red. The human eye is more sensitive in the green region of the spectrum than in the red region. This would probably be less susceptible to washing out in streetlights, headlights, etc. than an equivalent red version.

    This is a great product, and as to the color of the light, many state laws forbid the use of red on anything but the back of a vehicle. Exceptions for law enforcement & emergency response equipment, of course.

    Not a bad idea. We get chuckleheads dressed for the Tour De France on their racing bikes clogging the 55mph section of my commute home pretty much every day. Of course about half of them don’t even have lights (it spoils the racing look I guess), so this isn’t likely to end up on their bike.

    And +1 to the green lasers. Any tactical firearms fan will tell you how much better a good green laser works during daylight than the more common red. Much more visible day and night.

    but you cant really see those lines clearly from the inside of your car. if you can your either too far away to matter or much much too close!
