I can’t help it; I love Punkin Chunkin’. There’s just something about launching pumpkins a few hundred feet that gets the blood pumping. Perhaps it’s the satisfying splat at the end or the machines throwing them, but whatever the case — chunkin’ is cool.

This clip from YouTube is a great example of how building the right machine doesn’t have to be a great hulking monstrosity (although that’s cool, too) in order to have some fun chunkin’ punkins.

Trebuchets are alright, but the torsion class is where it’s at, IMO. Torsion catapults, a.k.a. onagers, use tightened rope bundles for the motor. The world record toss for the torsion class is 3091 feet. 2034 feet for Trebuchets (http://www.punkinchunkin.com/records.htm). Sorry, I’m kinda a catapult geek. Regardless, any catapult that can launch something farther than you can is pretty cool.

This is just cool! I’ve been to a Punkin’ Chunkin’ (I live about an hour away), just for curiousity’s sake. It’s a good time.
