Safe Home Ltd. has the Kidde KL-2S Two-Story Fire Escape Ladder for $32.67.

The Fire Escape ladder is a stowable roll-out ladder that fastens to the windowsill so you can make a quick escape from a fire or the inlaws this holiday season. The ladder holds 1000 lbs. and is 13′ long when unrolled, which is long enough to make an escape from a standard two-story house. They also have a three-story version which is 25 feet long. Most people have smoke detectors and a few fire extinguishers, but when the Xmas tree has gone up in flames and all exits are blocked, this is a much better alternative than breaking your legs leaping from the window. At this price it’d be great for a tree fort as well.

I was recently researching these ladders, and apparently the thing w/ this one is that it’s rated as single-use. Check out the First Alert EL52-2 Two-Story 14-Foot Escape Ladder. It has a 6-year warranty, holds more, the instructions recommend doing practice runs w/ it (so multi-use is okay) and it’s currently cheaper on Amazon.

Edit: Make that cheaper compared to the Kidde’s price on Amazon. My mistake.

Not so sure why this is rated as single use but…….maybe they just make an assumption that it could be damaged from the fire? Certainly, the price is right for such a device. I’ll have to look at the First-Alert one as well. Of course, living in a single story home, I have no “emergency escape” need but I sure see a lot of possibilities for these things.

Hopefully one never has to use these ladders once.
