Speaking of multi-tools (e.g., TM 11/20/09), I just saw the Level Best2 in one of those card pack mailers — PRODUCTS FOR WOODWORKERS. RECESSION BUSTING DISCOUNT COUPONS INSIDE! — that I usually toss into the recycle bin. This “ideal portable tool” comes in 12″ and 6″ sizes, and, if you order one 12″ version now using code LB2, you will “Get One 6″ Tool FREE!” — only $19.95 plus S&H, which appears to be $4.95. If you don’t like yellow, you can get a Level Best2 in blue, violet, or pink, also. They are pretty clear on its four uses: level, plumb, square, and ruler.

Web pricing starts around $6 for the 6″ and $10 for the 12″, so, depending on S&H from other sites, the bundle from the manufacturer could be a good deal. But is this a useful tool? What do you think?

Hot, IF it hold it shape, it would be usefla dn you can never tell when you will need a different measuring tool. But it is only as good as accuracy lets it stay true.

I say NOT. I haven’t used it but I have yet to come across any of these combo tools that are worth their salt. Jack of all trades, master of none. The truth is that you’re going to need a real level and a real square, angle finder at some point anyways so why cart this thing around too. Unless I’m missing something and it has abilities beyond the apparent.

I’m betting my 5 year old could destroy that in 10 seconds. It looks cheap and is probably prone to warping.

But wait! Yes, it’s cheesy and cheap – not inexpensive, just “cheap.” However, if you see that it also comes in pink, what a great thought for that gal in your life that refuses to leave your “stuff” alone what with Christmas (yep, I said Christmas, not holidays) just around the corner. But whatever you do, don’t tell her this was my idea!

If you have shelves to hang in a finished closet, and don’t want to mark up the paint job, this could be a few dollars well spent. Get an extra one for the tyke!!
