Dealmonger: Reconditioned Worm Drive Circ Saw
Right now CPO has a reconditioned Skil 7-1/4″ Worm Drive Circular Saw for $99.99.
A friend’s Skil saw recently gave up the ghost so I looked around for the cost of a replacement saw. This seems to be the best deal, especially if their free shipping offer works and you don’t have problems with buying a reconditioned saw. The saw has a 2-7/16″ depth of cut, 15 amp motor (for all that’s worth…), a worm gear drive, and it uses a 7-1/4″ blade.

Yeah they would be cool to have, but the more i realize how often i use my Circ saw i realize that a cheapo one does just fine. now if i were a carpenter, i think things would be different. So now we need a hot or not on Reconditioned tools…. or maybe a survey of reconditioned tools form different manufactures…

Seems that the new price is $99.95. The reconditioned unit is $40.00 less @ $59.95.
Skil’s regular website does not indicate this is an actually worm drive, just “worm drive style handles.”
The saw pictured sure looks like a sidewinder – not a wormgear saw.
Our Skill 77’s are many years old – still performing well after brush changes and regular attention to gear-case lubricant. We use 2 with BigFoot attachments to gang cut sheet goods.
Well Google product search screws me again…seems like false advertising for CPO to call it a worm drive saw…
@Nick: Agreed. Perhaps a call to their customer service folks is in order.

seems to confirm that it’s a sidewinder.

I have had years of good service from re-conditioned tools but they were top-line models to begin with. Have used Skil 77’s for years, no complaints, got a deal on the Bosch version a couple years back and find it to be a very good saw that I wouldn’t trade for any other (it does not get loaned out at all- the old 77 gets loaned!)
PW: Ditto on the Bosch version. I’ve used mine a lot! Even in the trade for a solid year and it’s still working like the day I bought it 6 or 7 years ago.
I don’t use a circular saw every day – so I took some advice and got the Skil 5510 5 1/2″ trim saw. I’m very happy with it. It has plenty of power, has plenty of depth to cut through 2 x lumber. It also weighs nearly 3 lbs less than it’s big brother, over 8 lbs less than it’s wormy cousin.
Re: Is it a wormdrive? If you had to look…
that’s not a wormdrive saw in the picture
That’s a sidewinder. There are no worm gears in it. Seems to be a misprint.
The title has been changed, it’s now listed as a Helical Drive Circular Saw.
