Need to move that heavy-duty workbench or other piece of shop equipment occasionally, but want to make sure it stays where you put it? The unique brake on Total-Lock Casters from Caster City locks both the wheel and the swivel bearing at the same time. The Model 4A casters have a standard 2 3/8″ × 3 5/8″ mounting plate, can support up to 400 pounds per caster, and have precision sealed ball bearings. The units pictured above are 4″ maroon polyurethane on gray polyolefin wheels with a 400-pound capacity, and cost $31 each. Other Total-Lock casters are available in 4″, 5″, and 6″ wheel diameters, with capacities from 250 to 400 pounds per caster and tread material including soft rubber, poly on nylon, polyurethane, polyolefin, and phenolic.

In general, Caster City seems to have a huge variety of casters and wheels, including some with a 15,000-pound or more capacity. They do caution that “load ratings are based on a speed up to 3 mph under ideal operating conditions.” I think if I had four of the heavy-duty casters under something weighing 60,000 pounds or more, I would definitely keep the speed under 3 mph.

Rockler has casters also called Total-Lock in 3″ and 5″ diameters for $19 and $21, but their capacities are 150 and 200 pounds per tire, respectively.

I like the casters from Woodcraft. I always buy an extra set when they go on sale.

Wrong picture? Why would something with sealed bearings have a grease fitting?

Grizzly has something that looks very similar for about 1/3 the price. I recently installed a set on my home built miter saw station. The key is the locking mechanism. The one pictured is the way to go, those darn see-saw ones dont really work that well and are difficult to un set once engaged.

  4. We put heavy-duty reversible casters on our Tool Chests and Roll-Away cabinets, too. They make all the difference when you need to make your shop pieces mobile when you’re working on different projects.
