One of the best ideas I’ve seen in a while is the custom knife designer on the Buck website.  If you just have to have one of Buck’s Hunters a certain way, for yourself or as a gift to someone else, you can now design it online and have it shipped right to you.

It’s an awesome idea for anyone out there who wants a very specific combo or who just doesn’t know what all the options are.  You can leaf through bolsters and handle materials until you find the one you like and order it right there.

There are a few drawbacks as well.  The first thing to remember is that it’s like Jack in the Box — they don’t make it ‘til you order it — so your rig isn’t going to be on the next flight to you the following day. The other downside is that only the Hunters are available for the online building program.  We hope that changes in the future.

For now we’ll just have to endlessly assemble them till we find the right mash-up of affordable and cool.

Tempting, I must say. Never knew you could get a 110 with a serrated blade, but still no one-handed opening feature. Price is prohibative too, $100? 110’s are sold for $30 at any Wal-Mart. 70 bucks can buy a lot of aftermarket engraving.
