Unlike many fire starters, the BlastMatch from Ultimate Survival Technologies allows you to start fires using only one hand.  You might not think this is an important feature until you’re alone in the wilderness with an injured hand.

Designed for extreme survival situations, the BlastMatch produces sparks three times hotter than a match in all weather conditions.  The BlastMatch lasts 1,000 strikes, and just so you don’t accidentally waste any of those strikes inside your pocket, you also have to depress a thumb button in order to engage the striker.

The BlastMatch contains a spring-loaded bar of high-performance flint material that rotates to prevent uneven wear.  Ultimate Survival Technologies also sets the carbide striker at what they consider the perfect angle to get the maximum amount of sparking.

Pricing starts at $18, which if you start looking at weatherproof lighters isn’t that outrageous.

UST also is makes Wetfire Tinder, a good companion to the Blastmatch. They’ve also come out fairly recently with “Sparkie” which does the same thing but in a smaller size. Doesn’t seem to be available tho, as their website says they sold out of the first run.

I’ve got a friend with one arm and one leg. I find him pocket knives sometimes. We used to go cut firewood with another fellow who doesn’t have any feet. And I ain’t jumping any fences myself. We’d kid each other that all we needed was a blind man to spot trees for us, and I’m surprised it never turned out that way. We had a ball.

I just don’t get it. If you are going to carry this item, you can carry a BIC LIGHTER (or 2 or 3). Dependable as all heck, operable with one hand, etc.

Because your Bic lighter got smashed and broke in the same accident that injured your hand.
