I bought a lower-end riding mower that didn’t come with these anti-scalp wheels on the front.   The wheels keep your deck and your blade from plowing into the ground — and trust me, I’ve done both.  I ended up pulling the deck off, welding brackets to the deck, adding wheels, and then finding out that the deck wheels hit the front tires;  version two fixed that issue.  I wish I’d found these MTD bolt-on wheels a few weeks earlier.

The kit works on 38” and 42” decks. MTD makes Cub Cadet, Troy-Bilt, Yard-Man, White, Yard Machines, and Bolens lawn tractors, so I assume the kit will fit most of those mowers. Once you run through a couple of blades, the $70 price tag looks very reasonable for two wheels and all the mounting hardware.

Not a lot of people know about the importance of these gauge wheels when it comes to tractors. Whenever I am talking to a customer about a tractor or riding lawn mower, it’s always one thing I point out because as you move up the line of tractors we offer you go from no gauge wheels, to two, to four, to five as you go higher in the line. These are especially important here in Florida where we have St. Augustine and Bahia grasses that will die if they get scalped even once.

So if you’re looking into a lawn tractor, always check to see if it comes with gauge wheels or ones can be added on. They are surprisingly important.

And as an after thought, the Craftsman 42″ version runs about $34.99. I imagine you could easily drill a few holes that adapt that to your tractor and save the 40 bucks.

Hey, thanks for the original post and thanks for the link Kevin! My 42″ Poulan (twin sister of Craftsman 42″) needs a pair of these as my yard has some dips and gets scalped all the time. I think I’ll try and pick some up this weekend!

The ones from sears work great. My mower is a Wizard brand (AYP) 42″ and it fits.

I just purchased a sears craftsman 30″ rear engine mower that surprisingly does not have gauge wheels attached to the mower deck. Any leads where I might find suitable ones to mount to the deck?

Any idea if I could drill and bolt these to a John Deer 42″ deck? My mounting brackets are falling off.
