Tool Talk #51: DIY Wedding Rings & Heirloom Shopsmiths
We’re joined this week by our friend Mike Haney who tells us about his experience making his own DIY engagement ring. (Spoiler: It worked. He’s engaged. Congrats!) We also run down this week’s top five and have a good time discussing Sean’s father’s decision to finally hand down his Mark V Shopsmith. Remember, if you’ve got a question or comment you can call us at 866-718-9403. (Podcast Download)

Woulda been nice if you guys had given the URL of the DIY wedding ring site:
http://www.newyorkweddingring.com/
(That was *not* easy to find. Mike also wrote up his experience in Popular Science, available at http://www.popsci.com/diy/article/2009-01/diy-proposal , which is how I was able to find the above link.)
Pretty neat stuff. I’d like to see more stuff on some of the more obscure platinum-group metals’ metallurgical properties — alloys of iridium, ruthenium, and/or rhodium to improve the hardness of platinum, for instance.

You can’t torture us like this. A DIY engagement ring and there are no photos??? C’mon guys.
I made my wife’s engagement ring from an old cut nail. Her female friends thought it was the most romantic thing in the world. The men all think I got away with murder 😀
BC: There’s a photo in the Popular Science article (linked in my comment, which is still awaiting moderation, but you can find it by Googling the phrase “A DIY Proposal”).

I made m fiancee’s engagement ring, And I do have pics. I Just added them to the toolmonger pool on flickr. We’re still engaged in a long engagement period, ending in December.
We totally have a post about this coming out next week, but we couldn’t pass up sharing it in the podcast first. Glad you liked; it struck me as incredibly cool.
