Both Chuck and I are aviation fans — he’s a licensed pilot and I was a lowly ramp rat — so it’s always a good day when we can yak a bit about aircraft. I’m not sure what reader Brent is actually building, but it looks hella-cool.

If you check out all his posted hotness you’ll even find a few short vids of him putting some of this wing assembly together. Never having attempted aircraft construction (except for the small radio-controlled variety), I must take my hat off to Brent for his monumental undertaking.

What we’re curious about is what the overall project is going to turn out looking like. We hope he keeps posting up his progress.

I was also going to say that it looks like either an aileron or flap, and since the RV series of homebuilt aircraft are far and away the most popular all metal homebuilts, I figured it was probably for an RV. Which RV, I wouldn’t know, but since the RV-10 is their “latest and greatest”, that would be quite probable.

The EAA chapter that I belong to should be considered RV Central. A lot of the members are either building RV’s or are flying RV’s that they’ve built.

That looks too big to be an aileron for something the size of an RV-10; that’s about the same size as the ailerons on the Embraer 145. The photo says it’s the right elevator, which makes sense (and is more in line with what I’d expect for an airplane that size). The photo also seems to be in a set of RV-10 elevator photos, so I’d say the RV-10 guess is spot-on 🙂

It’ll look a lot less weird once all those rivets are finished.

I’ve been dreaming of building a RV-10 someday… here are a few builders’ sites:

Tim Olson’s site — for every Van’s Aircraft kit model, there seems to be a few early builders who put up really great sites with a lot of detail, and this is it for the -10:

Another one, for a plane under construction. I believe this guy is located in Richardson or Garland (I understand the Toolmongers are from N. Dallas?)

Hey. That’s me. Correct. It is an RV-10 from Van’s Aircraft.

You are right, it is a big undertaking, but a fun one.

My kit for the RV10 was the 873rd one sold, so there are a lot in progress, with a bunch already flying.
