MSC is selling the Roper Whitney No. 5 Jr. Punch Kit for $70, through November 7.  The #5 kit includes punches 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, and 9/32″ in diameter, as well as the punch tool and a case.

While you can buy imported punches for much less, they don’t hold up as well over time as the Whitney does.  It’ll punch clean holes in up to 16ga. steel easily.

While all2ools.com lists it for $1 less, we suspect that with shipping it’ll be a better deal from MSC.  If you have any trouble with the link below, you can search MSC’s website for part#LB09271024.

I don’t work with sheet metal much and have never gotten my head around the thickness specs, but I do have a pretty good idea of electrical wire sizes. So (for example) is 14ga. sheet metal about the same thickness as the diameter of a #14 copper wire? Thanks in advance for educating a dolt.

  2. Old Coot says:

Forgot to add reason I’m asking: If 16ga. sheet metal is about the thickness of #16 AWG wire, it seems like this punch kit only will handle fairly thin steel, but perhaps much thicker aluminum or copper. True?

  3. Vince Bloom says:

16ga steel is about 1/16″ thick. Nominal thickness is 0.060″ for plain steel, 0.0635″ for galvanized steel. 16 gauge is fairly thick when it comes to sheet metal. The ductwork in your home is typically 28 ga. galvanized, which is 0.019″ thick.

It may go a little thicker on softer metals, but probably not too much thicker.

Use one of these at work frequently, I’d recommend getting the optional bench mount. Makes life a little easier.

Vince Bloom: Thanks for the info. I’ve got a lot to learn it seems.
