The crack-smoking price on Woodcraft’s high-speed steel turning sets has come down $50 for the month of October. If you were looking at taking the plunge on a five-piece or eight-piece set then this might be the time. Apparently no one else could justify $140 for them either.
These high-speed steel blades are hardened to Rc 62-64 — which, in English, means they’re harder and will hold an edge longer than chisels made from conventional carbon steel. In fairness, many chisels produced in the last quarter century meet or exceed the same standard, so it’s not as impressive as it sounds at first.
The blades are set into 16″ hardwood handles with brass ferrules, so they’re very attractive to look at. Longer handles also provide better control over the tip and add a bit of comfort if you’re going to have it in your hand all day.
It’s not a bad deal if you’re looking for something with a bit of style. Just remember: These don’t come super-sharp out of the box, so you have to put the edge on them before you start turning with them.
Pricing starts at around $85 for the eight-piece set.
