Laser Products modified the simple but versatile framing square by adding some lasers.  Now, instead of checking just a two-foot section of the wall for square, turn on the lasers and you can check the entire length of the wall.

The FR-16 works just like any other framing square, except the on-board lasers can extend the insides of the legs to over 100 feet.  The two 1-milliwatt lasers run for over 25 hours on two AA batteries and are easily calibrated in minutes.  Since you can calibrate the two lasers independently, you can also calibrate the angle between them, not just the alignment to the square.

We’re puzzled by Laser Products’ decision to mount the lasers to a 16″ x 22″ aluminum square instead of a standard 16″x 24″ framing square — but if you can live with this little oversight, they list the FR-16 for $90.  Shop around and you can find it for $71.

We have not tried this out – but many of the online comments about this tool – say that it does not live up to expectations – delivers only a weak laser dot rather than a line as implied in the picture.
