Impact Auger Bit

You need to bore a bunch of holes through some timbers, but your drill just isn’t up to the task. If you have your impact driver handy you can do the job with one of Irwin’s impact-wrench utility-pole auger bits.

Irwin designs these bits with a medium-fast screw point to bore through creosoted poles and construction timbers without clogging, binding, or stopping to clear chips. They heat-treat the full length of the bits so they resist bending under heavy use.

These auger bits come with hex shanks compatible with either 5/16″ or 7/16″ drive impact drivers. Sold in diameters ranging from 9/16″ to 1-1/16″ and in lengths of 18″ and 24″, they run $30 to $55 per bit.

Using auger bits in an impact driver also avoids the potential wrist snapping torque of a powerful drill motor if the bit binds while drilling. Especially appreciated if you are belted to the top of a utility pole but also useful if drilling heavy timbers where it is awkward to brace properly.

Impact guns have the same advantage when driving through steel – in that there is no toque reaction at break-through

Last week I finally started building a treehouse (pictures coming soon ) and needed an auger bit to drill through a 4X4 combined with 2x6x12. Therefore after my trip to the local hardware store, I was the proud owner of an Irwin auger drill. I was a little pricey but after drilling some holes it was all worth it! The ease of drilling was just like cutting cheese, no knots were a match for the drill.
Even my kids loved the way it was twisting itself through the wood.

If don’t want to screw around this is the way too go!
