One thing leads to another: First you want to race cars, then you want to modify and maintain your racecar yourself — maybe because you’re broke — and then you already have the welding equipment and the garage and you need a worktable, and before you know it you’re building Truckosaurus, bane of garden equipment and eater of fences. Things just happen. With me, I started out to build a recumbent bike, and now this cool video of a personal blimp lands in my inbox — enjoy!
When I started looking into the recumbent I wanted to build, I found the plans, welding, tube bending, and tube mitering that I thought I was going to need — that was also when I saw my projected budget and the death of the idea. At this point, fellow Toolmongers made suggestions about mitering and tools that could help me trim some costs. And then Dan Nachbar shared with us this vision of another home-built vehicle.
The Skyacht website contains loads of historical pictures, descriptions of the design, biographies of the designers — Dan Nachbar, Mike Kuehlmuss, and Wayne Crouch — and of course an extensive FAQ page. They’re guessing that someday they’ll be able to sell production models for about the cost of a small airplane.
