Porter-Cable’s PTX5 pneumatic reciprocating saw isn’t quite as powerful as its electric corded and cordless cousins, but what it lacks in power it makes up in agility. Its lightweight aluminum body weighs only 2.7 lbs compared to 8 lbs for a corded saw.
For comfort Porter-Cable surrounds the saw body with a rubberized cushion grip, and the throttle features a lock-off so you don’t accidentally start the blade moving. Consuming 2.0 SCFM at 90 PSI, the saw cuts up to 1/16″-thick steel and 1/2″-thick plywood at 5,000 strokes per minute.
The quick-change blade-holder looks like it uses special blades — at least the pictures of the blades don’t look like standard blades. We don’t know whether the PTX5 can use normal Sawzall blades.
Porter-Cable includes a 24-tooth wood blade and a 32-tooth metal blade in the $70 to $90 asking price.
