No, really. CNN’s running video of this poor guy whose friend accidentally shot a nail into his head while they were building a lattice out back of his house. The nail drove in all the way up to the cap, and once they found it, they rushed him to the emergency room…

…where doctors reportedly used a claw hammer from the guy’s tool kit to remove the nail. The man says doctors told him “that’s how it went in, so that’s how we’ll remove it.” Sounds a little simplified to me, but the good news is that the guy’s OK.

The takeaway from this: be freakin’ careful with nail guns, and for heaven’s sake, if you do have an accident — go to the hospital.

I would say the takeaway is- if you shoot yourself with a nailgun don’t forget to take your hammer with you when you go to the hospital.

I find this story incredible- literally- that is, unbelievable.

    1) I don’t have a ton of nail gun experience but I’ve learned to treat them almost like firearms. That is, keep the muzzle pointed away from you and others and before you shoot think about what would happen if the nail went through the backstop.

    2) This does sound suspicious. Generally a hospital wouldn’t let you keep a nail with blood on it. Or a body part. Or any other contaminated material. Also there were no pictures of his actual wound. Also also a hospital probably wouldn’t use a non-sterile carpenters tool to extract the nail when they have so many clean, specialized instruments at hand.

    Are you seriously disbelieving this?

As for the nail and the hammer — why not use a claw hammer? It’s a helluva lot better at getting protruding nails out in a straight line than any generalized surgical tool would be. Note that the nail is clearly protruding from his head (probably about 1/8″ – 1/4″ based on it being a 2 1/2″ nail), so there’s no reason to worry about sterilization — the instrument will not be going in an area that it’s an issue. And you REALLY want it coming out straight and not wiggling around, where it could cause trauma and brain damage. The next best thing would’ve been some forceps, which wouldn’t clamp around a round nail nicely, and wouldn’t make pulling it out straight very easy.

And yes, the hospital certainly would let him keep the nail if he asked — it’s his nail after all, and it’s not evidence in a criminal investigation. Helluva souvenir.

I find the claw-hammer extraction to be either unbelievable or really, really stupid. A an air nailer would shoot the nails fairly straight into a skull. Prying with a claw hammer could twist the nail and mess up a lot more gray matter. Surely a doc would want to pull the nail out as straight to its original path as possible. Some nice, greasy pliers would be better for that task.
