Side Battery Lifter

There’s so much crap stuffed into a modern engine compartment, sometimes you have to take things apart just to reach the frickin’ battery — and then there’s not enough room to get your hands around the battery to pull it out. In this situation, a battery lifter can save the day. We’ve posted about EZ Red’s Top Post Battery Lifter, but how do you handle a battery with side terminals? You grab their side battery lifter.

EZ Red builds their side battery lifter to last, using all steel construction. If you’re worried those rubber pads are going to fall off after a few lifts, fear not — they attach them with a super-strong adhesive.  A battery isn’t something you want to accidentally drop, so they put a non-slip vinyl grip on the handle.

The $12 side battery lifter will grab most batteries 4-1/2″ to 7-1/2″ wide with side or top terminals.

KD Hand Tools (Danaher) used to make a strap carrier (Part # 2224) for side-terminal batteries. It had 2 insulated screw-in posts at each end of the strap. Maybe it wasn’t effective or had other problems – because I can’t locate it online anymore.

I used to work in a big-box type parts store. One of the worst jobs I ever had, but that’s another story for another day. Anyway, we sold a lot of batteries and accepted a lot of cores. Most of the cores came in greasy or leaking battery acid, so we used battery lifters such as those shown above for moving the old batteries from the counter to the pallet in back without getting acid burns on our hands.

I could probably use one of these for my bike, where I can grab the battery, but with only 4 fingertips.

All batteries should come with a built in strap on the top, some do.

I use one of these every day at work. In four years we’ve had three, so one will last you a long, long time.
