Indexing Pry Bar

Archimedes once said, “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.” Most people don’t need to move the world, but occasionally they might need to replace their alternator. This indexable pry bar from Innovative Products makes it easier to get a lever into the ever more-packed engine compartment.

Made of high-carbon steel, the head of the pry bar indexes and locks to five fixed positions: 80°, 105°, 130°, 155°, and straight — that’s every 25° between 80° and 180°, for the mathematically challenged. Releasing the thumb lever unlocks the head and lets you change angles.

While IPA is silent on the number, most retailers claim you can apply up to 350 pounds of torque to the pry bar. What the heck this means is up to you — clearly somebody in marketing doesn’t understand that you measure torque in foot-pounds.

IPA manufactures a 16″ and 20″ version of this pry bar. Look to part with about $35 for either the 16″ or 20″ indexing pry bar. You’ll have to supply your own fulcrum.

The OEM for some of these might be Chain Enterprises in Taiwan:

Snapon also markets a bar very similar to the gearwrench version. It takes a ton of abuse without a problem. I’ve used mine with an extension pipe and have not had a failure yet.

Maybe it is the same product, but I have a nail puller that looks like a twin of this. The pry part is split as on a hammer, and I cannot tell if this bar is split or not. Anyway, I love whatever I have for removing nails, etc.

Westward had introduce a new design Indexable Pry Bar with Auto forward Ratcheting Feature. None of Snap On, or Gear Wrench has this cool feature. It is even much easier when you are working in tight spot where it can auto forward in right position for higher leverage. I have use it with extension pipe and the torque is very strong.
