Last week I was on-site to help put up a truss structure for an outdoor event. We requested four forklifts from the equipment rental company. What we got were not your standard warehouse forklifts, but these bad mamma-jammas with telescoping booms — they’re called telehandlers, or Lulls, the Kleenex of telescoping boom lifts.

Telehandlers excel at moving materials over rough construction sites. The tires are all-terrain, and all four wheels can turn to decrease the turning radius. They come in a variety of styles, but the ones we were working with could lift 6,000 lbs. up to 40 feet in the air. To stabilize these heavy loads, the operator can drop front outriggers and adjust the side to side pitch of the whole vehicle.

They weren’t quite what we were expecting, but they allowed us to lift the roof of the structure. An additional benefit: we were able to unload most of a tractor trailer by simpling extending the fork arms into the trailer towards the back.

The lifts pictured above are the JLG 6042 and Genie’s GTH 636. Prices vary, but if you’re thinking about getting your own telehandler, this auction can give you an idea of what you’re looking at.

Well, these are lifesavers on a job site, pretty much literally. I have driven them all, Cat, super6, lull, skytrack, pettybone, geil, etc. and they are all very similar to each other, some are fancier, some are bigger, but all are extremely useful.

If I requested a fork-lift and got one of those instead, I’d be pretty happy. Those are bad-ass. I’ve seen a pair of those setup an outdoor stage one time and it was up in no time at all.

I frame custom homes for a living and these are a real back saver, not to mention the safety and efficiency benefits.
