Crescent Chain Wrench

When a pipe wrench just won’t cut it — whether it just can’t get a good grip or won’t fit in the given space — grab your trusty chain wrench. A chain wrench wraps around hard-to-reach or irregularly shaped objects to give you the grip you need.

Crescent manufactures 12″, 15″, and 24″ long chain wrenches which have 4″, 5″, and 6″ diameter jaw capacities respectively. They chrome-plate the I-beam handle for corrosion resistance. For improved gripping power, the chain features concave cut teeth.

If you shop around you can find Crescent’s 12″ chain wrench for about $20, the 15″ for about $35, and the 24″ for about $50 — prices competitive with their pipe wrench cousins.

If you have serious pipe to move look at Wheeler Rex or Ridgid Chain tongs:

These come in much larger sizes.

At the other end of the spectrum – the Vise Grip 20R (27) chain pliers – with an 18 inch chain may fit better.

I’m particularly drawn towards Vicegrip style for stubborn oil filters.

Most of the time, I find a simple strap wrench works for me.

I work with more big pipe than small – but strap wrenches get used a lot on fine work – chrome plated fittings etc. – since they don’t mar the surface. The now – almost ubiquitos plastic handled – rubber strap wrenches work on everything from opening jar lids to turing shower heads — but they hardly will work to position a piece of 12 inch steel pipe.

  5. The best 12″ chain wrench ever on the world market can be seen on http://www.myark.com

This is a new invention and can fit size pipe with the clip on nickle coated chain attachment on to wrench from a 1/2″ round up to 6″ pipe also it does no dammage to pipe surface and can also have a strap attachment.

With out clip on chain or strap it is used as a ratcheting wrench for nuts that also does not dammage nut surfaces.

It also has a chipping hammer and a straight egde ruler with a 4/5 degree angle as well as a crocodile wrench at the far handle end that ratchets on smaller nuts.

It sells for $24.60 US and is high quailty finish and heavy duty.

The brands Cresent chain wrench and others similar has only one function and can only grab pipe over 1 1/2″ round or if under this it starts to slip also it needs oil on the chain or the chain will rust.
