The best gifts for kids teach them — without looking like they’re anything but cool. Take the Snap Circuit from Elenco for instance. Powered by two AA batteries, it walks youngsters though building everything from an AM radio to a burglar alarm, all via easy-to-understand guides utilizing snap-together components.

The kit comes with about 100 color-coded pieces that mix and match to form cool circuits. The best part is that the kit doesn’t require any tools — the components just snap together.

Street pricing starts at $30 for the basic kit with upgrades available for around $20.

Cool, now that they’ve dumbed down chemistry sets beyond belief. Maybe there is still some hope for the future scientist/engineer.

Great toy, actually. Had two sets over the summer months at work (I’m a goofing off elementary school teacher), and the kids enjoyed it. Funny though. The boys might only be eight, but they still don’t like to read the instruction manual. We teach ’em how to be men very young I guess.

All thre of my boys have used theirs to death. Currently the youngest (8) is messing around with it. He ignores the directions too.

My daughter also enjoyed the one I bought for “her” last Christmas. And she didn’t want to mess with the instructions either. I think that is more of a “tinkerer gene” thing than a Y chromosome thing.

At his 5th birthday we bought my son the SC-100 (Snap Circuits Jr.) and he’s played with it all year. He did follow all the instructions and wants more. So for Christmas we’re buying him the SC-750R. Tha should keep him entertained for a year or so. 🙂

PS. Great product, fantastic support (we had a broken part and it was replaced under warranty in under a week no questions asked.
