We’ve always said that if you can make a tool cordless — regardless of whether or not that’s a good idea — Ryobi’s probably offers one in their 18V One+ line.  Here’s one that looks pretty useful, though: the P410 random orbital sander.

Granted, it’s probably not the ideal choice for all sanding — and it does look like the tool equivalent of Frankenstein’s wife — but when you just need to knock down a few fibers or correct a little imperfection, it’d be handy to grab this instead of digging out the extension cord.  And that overmold rubber GripZone up top looks pretty comfortable.

It tips the scales at just under 5 lbs and has a grip girth of 9-1/4”.  It produces 10,000 orbits per minute, too, which should make short work of quickie sanding jobs — without dreaded swirl-marks thanks to the random-orbital action.  It’ll take most any 5” 8-hole sanding disc via its hook-and-loop pad.

The P410 comes with a two year warranty and is available at your local Home Depot for around $40.

Jeez… That’s one ugly looking tool. I suppose I’d have to try it to see if it actually was useful, but my first impression is “skip it”.

I’ve used this sander and while it is comfortable to hold and great in concept, the actual tool is nothing like a corded random orbit sander. The sanding pad does not spin under any pressure and without that spin, the orbiting action is not enough to do any real sanding. Ryobi may make the best tools for the buck…but not this one.
