Blum planes aren’t really tools. They’re art that happen to be functional tools as well. Gary Blum has been crafting his planes for 20 years and it shows. His work is a mixture of antique style and full-on love for woodworking. The Mesquite smooth plane pictured is an example of the kind of hardcore blending of old-school looks and modern tool work ethics we’re talking about. It features a fully adjustable 2″ wide blade and measures 9 1/2″ long overall. And you can actually request what wood type and metal fittings you want on your plane.
But, you get what you pay for. Prices for one of these treasures start at $200 and can go north from there, especially if you go crazy and order something like plantation-grown East India Rosewood. Check out Gary’s site for a ton of info on how these tools are made. Excuse me while I go fetch a drool bucket.
