Sanding by hand sucks.  Sometimes you can’t avoid it, but it’s surprising how often you can — especially if you have a full-sized 6” x 48” belt and 12” disc combo sander like this one from Jet.

The combo sander starts off with 1-1/2 hp worth of drive motor mounted to a base you can either mount tabletop or stand style.  It’s got two cast iron tables that feature positive stops at 90 degrees and 45 degrees for sanding flat pieces or mitered angles.  That means you can use the sander vertically, horizontally, or anywhere in-between.

A specially-designed metal belt guard allows full use of the 6″ belt width and length, and the drive drum is rubber-coated for a better grip on the sanding belt and less slippage. It collects dust from the belt and disc through a single 4″ dust port on the back of the base.

This is a solid shop unit and not a half step or beginners rig — 200 lbs. of sheer sanding power.  If you priced the Jet sander like coffee it would come out at just north of $4 per pound.  That’s not exactly easy on the wallet, but it kicks the crap out of hand sanding.  And you pay that much for coffee, right?
