Craftsman Jack System, Lift N Secure

This jack from Craftsman functions like a regular jack, lifting up to 17-inches.  But after you’ve lifted whatever it is you need to lift, the front part detaches to leave a “jack stand” in place.  It’s a neat idea, assuming that the stands are stable.

Having narrowly escaped a Lincoln that collapsed on its stock jack just seconds after I climbed out from under it, I have a new appreciation for jack stands.  The big question, of course, is will the Craftsman’s “jack stand” actually hold the same weight and be as stable as a normal stand.  Answer: we’re not sure.  It looks more like a temp jack than a real four-legged jack stand.

    I’m not sure this saves time.
    Suppose you want to elevate your car. Typically you would jack up the front and slide 2 stands under the car at appropriate locations. Then you would move to the back and repeat the process. With this craftsman system you would place the jack at each stand point and raise the jack. So you would raise and reposition the jack 4 times instead of twice. Just my 2 cents.

    Ray’s right. 1 jack, 2, (or more), real jack stands. I’ll always err on the side of safety, even if it takes longer. You ain’t gonna bench press a car, not even a sub compact.

    A lot of cars can’t really be lifted from one point like the readers before me suggest. All the cars I’ve ever had have required me to lift all four corners separately and then try to wedge a jackstand into the area that is reinforced for lifting.
    I can see lifting a whole side at a time as being feasible in an older full-frame car.

  4. Aaron, the “wedge a jackstand into the reinforced area” problem is precisely what these seem to be designed for. You don’t need one point for lifting and a separate point for holding — you “deploy” the jack stand directly into the reinforced spot.

    This looks like the standard ratcheting jackstand concept, with a “shoulder” that allows the jack to lift the stand into place. The fact that it collapses so low means it needs a telescoping structure, which implies extra points of failure when the mechanism gets old. I’m also curious how difficult it is to release the ratchets while the stand is under load. But if those concerns can be allayed, I’d try one.

    I’m very interested in this once my fears have been allayed concerning the quality of the jack. Most reviews I’ve seen of craftsman jacks lately make them out to be utter junk.
    On my car I have to put it up on ramps first to be able to get the floor jack under the center point to be able to use jackstands. This looks like a great timesaver as I normally have to move the ramps a couple times to get them just in the right spot so I’m able to close the garage door behind the car and still have a few spare inches to get around the front of it.

    AND EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS A TOTALLY NEW LIFTING DEVICE. It is UNlike any other car jack. This is a totally re-engineered, re-invented system.
    I know the people who invented it. Trust Me. This is a major score.

    Dear Mr. Cedarwood, You whet my appetite! Please tell me all you can about this unit. If it is totally stable as well as safe up & down it appears you’ve got your jack stands in place and the car jacked up, all in one effort, at each corner. One might have to purchase two(2) additional matching stands to make the unit really complete, eh? That being done, it sure appears efficient. Timewise, one only need find one secure place to lift at each corner with this clever innovation. Thanks for more info!!

    i just bought one from sears for 100.00(cause it was w/o an instruction manual)…i already have 6, 3ton jack stands to …place next to the two that came w/the jack 🙂 do not want to be the test pilot on this one but,when i saw this jack & went online wow what a deal,like everyone else i’m reading as much as i can on the safety of this thing…..but,it seems like a new mouse trap that might be better

    This things is incomplete and I can find where to locate additional jack stands.

    Does anyone know the manufacturer who would jack there car on only one side to 17″. I like to work under my car like oil changes etc. so where are the other jack stands why only one.

    To “Gary” above and other interested parties:

    I just bought this jack. This come with not one, but two jackstands included. This means that you could jack up one entire end of your car and leave the jackstands in place. It also has a third jack cradle included that fits over the front of the jack, so even with the two jackstands already in place at one end of the car, you can still use the jack to lift the other end and insert jackstands if you need to.

    I have not yet used this, and I agree that the stands seem to have several possible points of failure. However, after playing around with them, they feel very solid and show no signs of instability. I would be comfortable working under my car if lifted by these.

    The only thing that’s really needed is the ability to purchase another set of two jackstands to use with this system. So far, I haven’t found them to be available without purchasing another jack. Oh, and by the way, the thing is HEAVY!

    I have had this system for several years and haven’t had any problems with it. If you take care to make sure the locks are fully engaged, there are no safety issues that I have observed. Once loaded, the unlocking mechanism can’t be used. They no longer sell these, though, so I’m sure someone didn’t check to make sure the locks were engaged fully before climbing under the car… It is completely new, so if you don’t fully understand the mechanism I can see why you wouldn’t trust it to hold weight. It is pretty convenient to work with these once you get used to them though…

  12. I saw this. though it was a neat tool. especially a second stand. But my father told me safety is key. I always have a 6×6 steel block by my side to made sure the pressure of any jack doesn’t collapse .. if you haven’t pushed limits then id advise don’t buy something your really not going to use much…. Coming from an everyday mechanic with everyday problems …. 😉

    For some reason, I’ve never come across this before today. Now I’m wishing I had when it was readily available. Sure could use it today, as I’m about to go jack up my car to replace the brakes!
