The Makita Shear Wrench is a 10-pound screw-snapping monster.  It applies over 600 ft./lbs. of torque to shear off extra bits of fastener up to 7/8” in diameter all day long.  Is it cool?  You bet.  Do we need one?  Not really — then again that’s never stopped us before.

You simply inserting the unit’s head over a nut with a bit of fastener sticking out the back.  The swappable outer collar grips the nut while an inner sleeve grips the excess fastener tightly. With all that in position, pull the trigger to activate a twisting motion to relieve the fastener of the part caught in the inner sleeve.

You can then eject the “bit-o-screw” in the sleeve with the flick of a small lever located near the trigger.

We can’t picture a time when we would have to run out and burn $1,700 for a screw tip eater — but it’s a cool rig anyway, and we just had to share.

    these are used for fastening steel together. there are specifications for the tightness which the bolts that hold together steel members should be tightened to.

    screws are made that have a breakway knurled bit on the end — designed with a specific cross-sectional area that will break, in shear, at the specified torque.

    this tool actually torques the nut down by gripping this breakaway bit, and when it hits the design torque, it shears off the bit and the driver spins freely.

    very clever way to fasten steel! i haven’t seen a tool this lightweight to accomplish the task before.

    I work at a aviation maintenance place and we use these exclusively for most tension jobs http://www.hi-shear.com/fastener_hl_stds.htm . Same thing as the Makita idea but on a smaller scale, you just use a ratchet with a hole in the center and hold a allen key to hold the hilok, and then the collar snaps off at a set torque. I don’t know what application this would be useful for at home though.

    I’m glad you guys explained the use to me. I was struggling to come up with when I’d want to sheer a bolt off on purpose. Steel-to-Steel, eh? Yeah, I guess I won’t be getting this tool anytime soon. Then again, it sounds cool. Maybe I should re-build that dog-house. . .

  5. Ramset Redhead anchors work on the same principle: There’s a circumferential groove cut around the head that necks it down to a calibrated diameter. At a particular torque, the head snaps off, guaranteeing that the anchor was properly torqued when it was installed.

    Of course, it’s easy to thwart the system by leaving dust in the concrete hole, which acts as lubricant and allows the anchor to pull out even though it reached its design torque during installation. If you make something idiot-proof, along comes a better idiot!
