If you’ve been waiting to take the plunge on a set of Craftsman mechanics tools now might be a good time.  Sears is listing 20% off on a bunch of their mechanics sets through Saturday — and they seem to be running more sales lately in preparation for their spring events, so it might be worth a trip to the store to see what’s not listed.

Seems like the local stores are not on the same page for sales–at least with the items not listed on the website / flyer. My local store has vacuum attachments for 50% off, the store near my office has them for regular price (and I visited them both on the same day). So I echo your idea about browsing through the local store–I bet the sales for non listed items are based on excess inventory.

I like the tools, just never had luck with the case. I had to cut a piece of foam and lay it on the tools before closing or all the sockets will fall out of place.

  3. The latches holding my case together failed within a year. I took it back, expecting a Craftsman replacement, and was told that the warranty applied to the tools only, not the box they came in. If I bought a metal toolbox, they said, that would be warranted. Well yes, but those aren’t as compact as the sensibly-sized plastic case, and they rattle like crazy in the back of a car.

I wrapped a Velcro strap around the case and I’ve been using it like that since 1996. In 2003, the inner pallet separating the loose tool storage from the organized socket storage started falling out. Fifteen minutes with a knife and some sneaky tricks with a ty-rap were all it took to thread another Velcro strap into the body, so it now holds the pallet in place. Still going strong…

Sears is fired in my book. I won’t set foot in there, except to exchange tools I already own. After they shut down the register in Longmont after I stood in line for 10 minutes, I still shopped there. After they kept my snow beater in the shop overnight to give me an $800 repair estimate on a worknig brake system I kept shopping there. After I called the Ft Collins store and they said they were sure they had the struts I needed in stock, and I drove 20 miles to pick them up – only to hear “we don’t have those, who did you talk to?” I kept shopping there. After an hour the 20 mile away Greeley store picking out my 10% off all appliances, only to hear “you only get 10% off with a Sears card” – even though the sales circular said nothing about it, they are friggin fired. I don’t care if they are selling master mechanics tools sets for ten bucks, they will never see a dime of my money again.
