If you’re a hands-on kind of car guy, you should definitely have a subscription to Grassroots Motorsports.  While Road & Track and Car & Driver are fun, they rarely get down to the hardcore nuts and bolts of fixing up cars, and they’d never consider writing about something many of us tool guys love — older cars.

Back when I was in college, I was autocrossing around the Central Florida region, and actually spent some time with many of the people who still work for GRM.  I strongly doubt that any of them would remember me — I was just another snot-nosed college kit — but I did see many of them at the track, and I wrote some coverage of the old One Lap of Florida for them once. 

Here’s what I remember: These guys are completely legit.  They love cars — and not just brand new expensive ones.  They’d rather spend their evenings dirty under the car than standing around drinking and shooting the bull about cars they — and we — can’t afford.

After college I lost track of the magazine, but a few years ago I picked it back up and was amazed at how much it’d grown.  Now it’s thick and glossy, but it’s still packed with real-deal articles about real-world project you could actually take on.

Seriously, check it out.  You can find GRM in major bookstores like B&N and Borders now, so pick one up and check it out.  I’ll bet you end up with a subscription.

    Hey Check – this is not the first time I hear of them, but it is the first time I get such a good explanation about who they are, what they do, and what to expect from the magazine.. I’m going to have to pick on up and check it out.

    Rick: You’ll get a kick out of it. A few issues back they printed a run-down of all the C5 model Corvettes with their specs and parts availabilities for those who might be interested in picking one up now that the price has dropped out of banker-with-a-mid-life-crisis range. They did the same thing with Miatas earlier, explaining how to recognize each change and which ones are best for which purposes. Good stuff!

    I’ve been a subscriber for about 13 years, and they have stayed rock solid true to their roots, and the quality has stayed high. If you like cars, like wrenching on your own cars, and don’t have a Trump budget, this mag is for you.

    I begged them more than once for a lifetime subscription. They couldn’t do that for various reasons, but they finally came through last year with a 10-year for $100 deal. Needless to say, I’m good through 2016…

    Ooh! Hey Chuck, when were you in Central FL? I used to autocross with the Martin Sports Car Club around 1993-4, and lived in Melboring.

    Toolaremia: I was autocrossing in 1990 and 1991. I had an ’88 CRX Si, and made it to my share of Martin events as well. (DS was a heated class in CFR back then!) I remember the “Mini Prix” — is that what it was called? — that stirred up some much trouble. They had the course running from one parking lot, out onto the “ring” road and into another one. People were getting into fourth on the road. Crazy stuff.

    I lived in Orlando (near UCF) and later in Titusville.

    Hell, you probably ran into Tim Suddard and crew at events as well. I can’t say enough about how down-to-earth they all were — and seem to still be.

    Certainly worth checking out, I have only seen it in passing. Grassroots anything–when it is actually grassroots and not coopted or corporate grassroots (astroturf)–is my favorite place to find the cutting edge of DIY as well as simple solutions to complex problems. Sigh. There needs to be more of that.

    Love the magazine! Also love how they have a Canadian Edition, not many magazines out there make the effort to cater to us Canucks up north!

    And their online message board is always an interesting read!
