We wrote in detail about the 3/8″ version of this kit in the past, and it’s quickly become one of our favorites around the Toolmonger shop.  Every time we put it away, it ends up back out.  It’s that useful.

Without repeating our raves about the 3/8″, let us just remind you that they also make a 1/4″ version which absolutely rocks for getting at difficult-to-reach screws underneath the dash of an F150.  (You can imagine why we discovered this today.)

So, if you haven’t heard of the XL Pass-Thrus, check out our hands-on with the 3/8″ kit, then pick up one of each.  If you’ve already got the 3/8″ kit, pick up a 1/4″, too.  You’ll be glad you did.

Street pricnig starts around $50.

I am in the market for a pass through set. Does the hinge have a locking mechanism for use as a traditional ratchet?

I think that little button is the lock for it. I think.

Chris: Absolutely. If you get a chance, check out our hands-on with the 3/8″ drive version. The 1/4″ is exactly the same, just smaller. (It’s linked in the post above.)

Personally, I think the locking mechanism is one of the features that really makes the difference with the XL pass-thrus. Between the short-sweep ratchet (you have to turn in significantly less to get a “click”), the pass-thru feature (it replaces deep sockets), and the locking flex mechanism, this thing just won’t go back in the drawer.

You know how sometimes you *want* to have a certain opinion of a tool, but the tool just forces a different one on you? This is one of those situations. We love this thing, and it wasn’t by choice.
