Hitachi released a cool set of diamond grit bits today for use with materials such as tile, marble, porcelain, and glass. The bit’s hollow, and the outer ring of diamond abrades through the material leaving a core that’s removable via a window in the side of the bit.
Hitachi’s offering five versions in the following sizes:
- and 3/8″
They also claim that they’re quite easy to use as they’re designed to work with any cordless drill using only water as a coolant; Hitachi suggests using a small spray bottle. Positioning the bit at an angle helps to pilot the hole and helps to prevent wandering. The core extending into the center of the bit also helps to stabilize and position it as you drill.
In some kits, Hitachi includes a drill guide and “water cooling system” which consists of a sheet that attaches to the surface with suction cups then offers a hole to guide the bit as well as a small water reservoir that streams onto the hole as you drill.
Hitachi says these are available now at Lowe’s, but we couldn’t find them listed. We’ll get back to you with pricing information when we know more.
