Porter Cable says this new compact belt sander will hit shelves this month, bringing with it some pretty slick features — most of which center around its small form factor.  Specifically, its sides are flat, which allows you to sand right up to vertical surfaces.  There’s also a grip incorporated into the spot where the power cord exits the tool to give you another way to hold on to it when you’re sanding in tight, difficult spaces.

If you want to really wail on something with it, they do include an installable auxilliary handle.  And, you can also attach a dust port to connect the sander to a shop-vac or other dust collection system.

All in all, it looks like a pretty capable small belt sander.

Looking at the picture, it appears that only one side is flat, like any other belt sander. I guess with a 2 1/2″ wide belt it will be narrower that most though. I’d have to try it to see if it could do any more than my current belt sander.

Looks too short to flatten well, but I guess you could stick with thickness or hand planer for that.
