We’re always interested to see what shows up in the “cool tools” section of Kevin Kelly’s site, and the post by contributor Kurt Wendelken regarding topside oil changes caught our eye. Apparently these changers work by using a vaccuum to suck the oil out via the dipstick tube.
Admittedly, changing the oil without having to get under the car sounds pretty tempting, but we can’t help but wonder how much just pulling the oil out the top would really help. For example, we have a couple of Miatas, and it’s pretty difficult to get at the filter from the top. It’s pretty much the same deal with our F150, and it’s worse on the PT Cruiser.
On the other hand, the article indicates that a similar method is used by Mercedes dealerships, so maybe there’s something to it.
We found quite a few of them available online starting at around $40.
If you have any experience with one of these, drop us a line — we’d like to hear what you think.
