This Craftsman sander from the Sears site is on sale today for $10, which is down from the “never gonna touch it” price of $35. We’re guessing they just can’t stand looking at them gathering dust anymore and are shipping them out as best they can.

It looks like the Compucarve — which has received mixed response from the woodworking command seems perpetually unavailable for review — isn’t the only digital-age ace up Craftsman’s sleeve. Check out their AXS storage chest line, complete with LCD “information center” and integrated LED task lighting.

This jack from Craftsman functions like a regular jack, lifting up to 17-inches. But after you’ve lifted whatever it is you need to lift, the front part detaches to leave a “jack stand” in place. It’s a neat idea, assuming that the stands are stable.

From the Sears clearance section: a 16″ camouflage toolbag for $8.97. It has a waterproof bottom, padded strap, and Realtree “hardwoods green” camouflage. You get a total of 14 internal pockets and five external pockets. Just don’t leave your tools in a wooded area – you might never find them again.

Sears changed the Craftsman Club discount policies a few years ago so that they only apply to items in the flyers — and only for a limited time. So if you’re one of the people who still receive the flyer, you should know that the current savings period ends this weekend.
Personally, we didn’t see a lot in the flyer that excited us this time. We did notice that the 19.2V combo kit is on sale, but that’s about it. (And while we really like the 19.2V hammerdrill — it’s a great bargain tool — we’re not so sure about the rest of the kit.)
Anyway, if you’ve been planning to jump on anything in the current flyer, now’s the time. And if you want to join the Craftsman Club, remember to contact Sears instead of us. We can’t help.

Sears is listing their 6-piece 19.2V combo kit for $160. The kit includes a 1/2″ 2-speed drill/driver, a 5-1/2″ trim saw, a 4-position orbital-motion jigsaw, an orbital sander, a bagless hand vacuum, and a fluorescent light. You also geat a tool bag, changer, and two 19.2V NiCd batteries. I already own the drill from this line, which is in constant use during my house renovations and has performed fantastically – and stood up to the, erm, significant abuse I put my tools through.

These combo wrenches are short, flexible, and on sale over at Sears through Saturday. For $100 you get sevenwrenchs in sizes 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, and 18mm. The ratcheting box end flexes through 180-degrees and locks into 9-position. They’re pretty thin and also boast a 5-degree ratcheting arc — great for digging yourself out of low-clearance messes.

Sears fired up the ‘ole email server this morning to let all of us Craftsman Club members know about their “new” 7-1/4″ 15 amp circular saw. I put the finger-made quotes around the word “new” because I can’t see how it’s much different than the other saws they offer — or those of their numerous competitors. Of course, it does have a “dual bulb LED worklight.”

Getting ready to buy a new roll-away? Craftsman offers their ball-bearing models in a variety of baked-enamel colors, including screen-prints like this American flag/statue of liberty combo.
Note: In competition with our friends at The Hardware Aisle, we’re posting lots of patriotic tools today and tomorrow. Look for a post on Wednesday (the 4th) where you can vote for your favorite. And don’t forget to submit your favorite patriotic tools! If your suggestion is the reader favorite, we’ll send you a tool from the test pile — something nice.

Long-time friend of TM Stuey writes: “I scanned in the June 29th and 30th Craftsman flyer and posted it to the photo pool. What caught my eye was the ‘50% off all in-stock GearWrench ratcheting wrench sets’ deal. Items 44003 and 44004 — 8-piece reversible 5-degree ratcheting wrench sets in SAE and metric, respectively – are currently on sale for $35 from $60. The flyer quotes them at $70, so these sets might remain at the $35 price (as opposed to 50% of $60).”

Long time TM reader Stuey emailed us today with his analysis of Craftsman’s Father’s Day sale specials. He’s found a few interesting discrepancies, especially when comparing the “sale” prices to standard catalog prices. In short: many “sale” items are actually sold for similar prices every day in the catalog. Read on past the jump for details.

Here’s a nice router combo available at Sears: a shank router with a 330 sq. in. laminate table top complete with multifunctional fence for $60. That’s $60 off the regular price. The router features a 2 hp 10A motor, a 1/4″ collet, adjustable depth, and soft grip handles. The router table ’s miter gauge adjusts from 0-60 degrees in two directions and features a dust port to connect a wet/dry vacuum.

I just spotted this over on Ben’s Bargains — a Craftsman overhead cabinet and riser that’d make a nice-looking addition to your rolling tool cabinet, though it looks like it’d be right at home on a small workbench, too. The upper cabinet features tool storage in the doors. Hooks for the metal pegboard back are included. While the original $400 price is questionable, the current $50 tag seems like a fine deal.

If you’re a member of Sears’ Craftsman Club, you probably already know that a while back Sears adjusted the club benefits so that your additional savings apply only to items in the current club flyer and only during a short period after the release of each flyer. For example, the most recent flyer came out late last week and expires tomorrow.
Some items of interest:
- A 19.2V Drill w/Worklight for $95
- A 30-Piece Screwdriver Set for $33
- A 74-Piece Speed-Lok Master Drill and Drive Set for $40
Of course, you can check all these out in your flyer.
Important Note: Toolmonger is not Sears and cannot address any issues with your Craftsman Club membership. If you want to sign up for the Craftsman Club, contact Sears!

I recently tested four modern cordless screwdrivers for Wired, and I’m happy to report that (as many Toolmongers have discovered) these once-wimpy tools have finally exited the dark ages. Three of the four screwdrivers tested were quite usable, and two of them were obviously pro-level tools that I’d be proud to own.
I’ve linked to the individual reviews below, but if you get the chance, check out the full test coverage on page 108 of the current (June, 15.08) issue.

Sears is emailing the Craftsman Club to let us know they’ve got the AccuTrac laser measuring tool on sale for $100 (regularly $120) today. Besides measuring distances without a tape, it includes a recall feature that stores up to ten measurements, and it can calculate square footage and triangular distances internally.
