Dealmonger: Dynafile 14000 Pneumatic Abrasive Belt Sander $383

Thursday, August 14th, 2008
AbrasiveBeltSander.jpg

All2ools.com is selling the Dynafile pneumatic abrasive belt sander for the low price of $383. It looks rather funky, but it has it where it counts — did we mention it’s pneumatic?

Because its belt measures between 1/8″ and 1/2″, many tool guys reach for the Dynafile when they’re blending welds or finishing castings with small nooks and crevices that a larger abrasive tool can’t reach. Try getting into nooks and crannies with your belt sander and you’ll understand.

Dealmonger: Kant-Twist 2″ Clamps $11

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008
34855850.jpg

According to their latest “Super Savers” flyer, MSC is selling Kant-Twist’s T-handled 2″ clamps at the low price of $11 apiece, if you buy two or more. Make sure you follow the link from the flyer, as the clamps’ll come up at the higher price if you just search the catalog. If you buy only one, the price is $13.33 — still a deal, although Shop.com sells them for $13.07.

Kant-Twist’s C-type clamps work great for welding and machine shop setups — they don’t twist as the jaw pivots down to tighten. They’re so superior, I rarely use a plain C-clamp anymore.

Dealmonger: Machinery’s Handbook, 28th Ed. $57

0831128003.jpg

Bookholders.com is selling a number of copies (most seemingly unused) of the latest edition of Machinery’s Handbook for only $57.34. If you don’t own a copy of Machinery’s Handbook, what can we say? It’s the bible of the metalworking trades and contains just about any information you’ll need in the shop. If you want to save even more money, look for earlier editions, which you can often find for as little as $5-10 at used bookstores.

Dealmonger: Weldon Four-Piece Countersink Set $35

Friday, August 8th, 2008

365-9304plusLJ.jpg

Eagle America is selling this four-piece set of Weldon 82-degree countersinks for $35.  They’re “zero-flute,” which means the cutting edge is produced by a hole running through the tool. They never chatter and tend to self-center much better than multi-flute countersinks. Around the shop we often use them to debur a hole after drilling.

Dealmonger: Universal Transfer Punch $6.50

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

65160010.jpg

Wholesale Tool is selling this universal transfer punch (1/4″-3/4″) for $6.50. A universal transfer punch helps to transfer the location of an existing hole to a workpiece underneath, when making a bolted assembly for instance. The punch self-centers with a spring-loaded cone in the hole — just whack it with a hammer to put a prick mark on the piece underneath. These come in especially handy for odd-sized holes that an ordinary transfer punch set won’t work for.

Dealmonger: Panavise 301 Standard Vise $31.79

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008
vise.jpg

ElectOtronics is selling the old standard Panavise #301 for only $31.79. I used to be skeptical about the utility of the Panavise, but now I use it for all sorts of delicate jobs that require the multi-axis positioning and gentle grip — filing small parts, tapping, etc. AVToybox lists it for an even lower price, but their cart system seems broken, which is annoying.

I like to attach one of these to the side of my rolling tool cart — it’s great for car work or doubling as a soldering iron holder. Though this may not be a recommended use, it does work well.

Dealmonger: General Tools #888 Dowel Centers $3

dowel-centers.jpg

Ace Hardware offers some incredibly low prices, if you can get past the shipping costs. We found these General #888 dowel centers for only $3 — exciting stuff if you like your table legs to be straight.

Dowel centers are handy little plugs with points that you insert into drilled holes in one piece of wood, and then you can transfer the location of those holes to another piece of wood — if you’re building shelves, for instance.

An Ebay store is selling the Malco TS1 Turboshear for only $32. The Turboshear turns your cordless drill into a power metal shear, capable of cutting up to 20-gauge galvanized steel much easier than the ole tin snips. Blind cuts require only a 1/2” starting hole.

For comparison, Magnum Tools’ website lists the Turboshear for $39.

Dealmonger: Optivisor Binocular Magnifier With Extra Lens $35

Monday, July 28th, 2008
BINOCULARMAGNIFIER.jpg

Micro-Mark is lowering the price on their 2-1/2 X Optivisor Binocular Magnifier — and while $35 isn’t that great a discount over the regular price of $39, they’ve sweetened the pot by including a 1-3/4 X extra lens.

The Optivisor allows you to do hands-free close-up detail work — no need to hold a magnifying glass — and it flips up out of the way when not needed.
