Stanley Bostitch’s StrapShot: A Nailer For Metal Connectors

Monday, October 8th, 2007
MCN150_mid_res)_TM.jpg

Building codes across the country are now requiring more and more metal connectors (joist hangers, hurricane ties, etc). In order for a connector to meet code in most places, you need to have a nail in every hole available. This meant a lot of hammering, because you couldn’t just use a pneumatic nailer — until now. Stanley Bostitch’s StrapShot pneumatic nail gun actually exposes the tip of the nail, so you can place it right in the hole in the metal connector. Pull the trigger, and move on to the next nail.

Hands On: Ridgid 2 1/8” Brad Nailer

finnailer01.jpg

I always thought of air nailers like exotic European sports cars: very cool, nice to look at, and totally out of my league.  Guess what?  I was wrong.  Some of Ridgid’s models — like the R2138NA 2-1/8” brad nailer — are quite affordable and simple to operate.  After spending some time with one, I can’t believe I didn’t buy one long ago.  Read on past the jump for my hands-on experiences.

Ladies And Gentlemen, We Have A Winner

ridgid-post.jpg

First of all, we’d like to thank RIDGID for their generous offering of a set of pneumatic tools for giveaway to one of our loyal readers.  Look for reviews of these great tools from us soon — as well as some thoughts from our winner, Stuey.

Yes, that Stuey.  If you’ve spent more than ten minutes on TM, you’ve probably read some of his insightful comments.  He’s been hanging around since the very start, and considering the number of comments he’s left, it’s surprising it took this long for his name to pop up in our random selection processes.

At any rate, he’s now one lucky dude as he’ll receive a set of just about all the pneumatic nailers RIDGID makes.  Assuming he’s bought a reasonable compressor, he’ll never hurt for nailers again.

Look for another comment-based giveaway soon, and we look forward to hearing what Stuey thinks of his gear when it arrives.

Dealmonger: A Gravity Feed Blaster Gun For $10

Gravity Feed Blaster

Harbor Freight is offering this gravity feed blaster gun for $10 right now.  I don’t really need one, but at this price I’ll probably pick one up just for the hell of it.  The Central Pneumatic #93321 features a 9-ounce hopper, a 5 mm nozzle, and demands a max air pressure of 90 PSI and a volume of 1.7 CFM.

Cheap-Ass Tools: A $6 Die Grinder

post-diegrinder.jpg

I actually own one of these 1/4″ pneumatic die grinders from Harbor Freight, and it’s not too bad.  It spins at 22,000 rpm when provided a steady stream of 90 psi air, and does its job quite reasonably.

Makita Compressor

Here’s another compressor deal from Ace Tool, this time a Makita.  Ace lists the Makita MAC700 at $150 down from the regular $288.  This compressor has a 12.4A, 2 HP, 2-1/2 gallon oiled single “hot dog style” tank and delivers 3.3 CFM at 90 PSI.  Ace Tool also offers free shipping on this unit which beats out all other vendors I could find — including Amazon!

Dealmonger: A Hitachi Six-Gallon Oil-Free Pancake Compressor For $150

Monday, June 18th, 2007
Air Compressor

Amazon is currently listing this Hitachi six-gallon pancake air compressor for $149 — not a bad deal for a brand-name product.  Other than the six-gallon tank, it has a 2 HP, 13A, oil-free induction motor which delivers 2.6 CFM at 90 PSI with a maximum working pressure of 135 PSI — plenty for a nailer.

An Impact Wrench For Tight Spaces

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007
post-butterflywrench.jpg

Need impact wrench power in space way too small for the big gun?  You need a “butterfly impact wrench” like the one pictured above from Campbell Hausfeld.  It’s a 3/8″ drive model that delivers 75 ft-lbs of torque — about all you should apply to 3/8″ drive sockets anyway — yet measures only 3.8″ wide x 2.1″ high.
