Deals: Buy a Gerber Mutli-Tool, Get a Keychain Tool Free

Stuart writes: “I’m not sure if the Gerber Suspension Butterfly is a winner, but for $25 it’s gotta be better than my loose cheapo.  The best part is that when you buy one from Amazon right now, you get a Gerber Clutch for free.  I don’t have a Clutch, but I do have their Shortcut.  As far as I can tell, the main difference is that one has scissors and the other has pliers as the main part of the mini-tool.  So, for $25 you get a hopefully-adequate multi-tool and a great mini-tool.  For those of you who (like me) can’t splurge on a Leatherman, this is a deal you might want to consider jumping on.”

Finds: 12-in-1 Pen

12in1pentool.jpg

Whenever I watch a James Bond movie, I wonder why Bond didn’t take better care of the cool gadgets that “Q” gave him.  It always pisses me off when he trashes his cool gear.  For instance, if 007 had the 12-in-1 pen tool, he’d no doubt use it to cut himself free after being tied up, pick the lock with the tweezers, then once he was out jab the guard in the neck with it and then throw it away

If I were “Q,” I’d kick his ass.

Hiding inside the 12-in-1’s milled shaft are 12 different tools that’ll come in handy for all sorts of little repairs — or escapes from elaborate but easily escapable mantraps.  You know, tools like screwdrivers, an awl, tweezers, a wire stripper, saws, cutting blades, and a stainless steel fork. Hey, you never know when today’s spy-on-the-go might need a fork hidden in his pen.

Finds: Sheffield 3 Piece Tool Set

I consider a tool a good tool when I paid a fair price for it and it does the job for which it was purchased.  While the Sheffield three-piece tool set isn’t a Leatherman set, that’s not really the point.  It’s useful and boasts a low price point.  I’ve used Sheffield knives before, too, and while they’re no SOG or Buck, they are about a third the price.

The set starts with a useful one-hand-opening liner lock knife that sports a 4-1/2” drop point pattern blade and a hardwood handle.  The set’s other two pieces are pliers-based mutlis featuring the usual suspects such as saws, screwdrivers, awls, and clip pattern blades, and are also adorned in hardwood.

Reader Find: The Tool Lite

Mark writes: “This is a credit-card-sized tool that fits in your shirt/coat pocket or in your wallet.  I’m a police officer and I own two.  I keep one in my shirt pocket while working, and I also have one in my glove box.  During a camping trip last summer, I used it constantly – especially the bottle opener and mini light.  It’s a great value for the price.”

One caveat: Don’t forget and leave it in your wallet when you go to the airport.

This photo’s been making the rounds today.  Since we’ve been covering a number of different multitools recently, we thought you’d enjoy it.

Update: Whoops.  Saw this on Digg this morning, then noticed that SuperJdynamite (a relatively regular commenter here on TM) submitted it as well.  Thanks SJD!

Finds: Pocket Wrench

Multi-tools come in all different shapes and sizes, but one thing that always gets us is the lack of a wrench.  Arguably, you need a wrench as much as a screwdriver, but still most multi-tools are sans wrench.  The Pocket Wrench from Coast Cutlery, though?  All wrench.

Reader Find: The Leatherman Juice S2

Roscoe writes: “The Leatherman Juice S2 is, in my opinion, the most functional multitool out there.  This is the only Leatherman I know of that combines the functionality of pliers, with the convenience of scissors.  One of the biggest benefits of this multi-tool over others is that the knife blade is located on the outside of the handle, so you don’t have to open the pliers to get to a knife.  I carried one of the original Leatherman knives a few years ago and didn’t find it very comfortable to use, and sure missed my scissors and easy access to a knife.  This is a great, simple tool.”

Finds: Swiss Tech Micro Tool

Multi-tools have invaded almost anything with a pocket, sleeve, drawer, or clip.  One such implement that caught our eye recently is the Swiss Tech Micro Tool.  I guess some people have enough MacGyver in them that they require a little more from their keychains. (more…)
