Video Friday: Moody Axe-Making
tramadol online pharmacy
Sure, the music is a little bit moody for my taste, but (even without sound) this video does a great job of documenting the making of an axe from forging, heat-treating, and sharpening the head down to cutting, spokeshaving, and finishing the handle — all in about six minutes. There’s some great cinematography, too. Enjoy, and we’ll see you next week.

Video is nice , but you posted it already this winter…
I would suggest to view part II – chisel making.
The technique of forge-welding the cutting edge to a non-hardenable body is a throw-back to the time when steel was an exotic, expensive material and labor was cheep. Then, the body would have been iron, now, I assume, it is mild steel.
My 1907 copyright toolsmith manual and my own experience, points out that the practice of partially quenching only the cutting edge rather than the whole tool sets up internal strains that might cause the ax to break on that line.
Nice tools and nice videos.
I like “Video Friday”.
Thanks.
Love this video. I’ve watched it several times over the last couple months and have sent it to several of my “tool buddies”. It’s actually partially inspired me to start blacksmithing. I’d like to make my own knives and axes to sell at local markets for fun!
Great video…I feel the same as Terry, would be great to try out some blacksmithing after watching this!
Chuck & Sean,
It’s been quite awhile since any new updates.
Hope you guys are ok.
Been thinking the same thing Mike.
Wow last story posted from June 7th. First the podcast dies and now the site. Good site and I know you guys are busy, but you should have taken the money when offered and run.
{CRICKETS}…….
Yeah, we miss you guys! I know people have busy lives but surely at least one post a week is do-able? This used to be one of my favourite blogs.
Every so often I drop by, see the same post from June —and worry a little.
Really hope that nothing serious is preventing even an status announcement.
Anybody know what happened here? The site is still up of course, but no activity. You would think one of the principals would have posted a notice of some kind.
Well Toolmonger was fun while it lasted.
Toolmonger RIP?
Looks that way.
I understand how much work it takes to run a site being a web designer/developer and have owned/operated a number of sites over the years. I have not had such a following as this site though.
That said it is a little unfortunate that the site owners couldn’t take 5 minutes out of their day to put up a quick post with an update. Instead all of us probably check this site every day looking to see if there was an update. Yet nothing.
Sad part is if they still have their ad revenue setup they are literally collecting money daily for leaving us all hanging.
Pretty sad and disrespectful to all those who have given their time to making this site so much traffic over the years not to mention money in their pockets.
Last sentence apparently was all jacked up… meant we were all loyal to this site and that resulted in traffic generated and money earned.
It’s possible there’s no revenue unless someone clicks on one of the ads. I don’t know, I’m probably one of the few people that don’t claim to be a web designer/operator/blogger, my CS degree is from 34 years ago, I am one of the few that still programs using BASIC and remembers COBOL.
Recent posts indicated the guys had a lot on their plates. Family, school (they are completing degrees,) and jobs to fund all of it.
They also mentioned that they could have paid off their houses with the offer they were made. It’s a shame that they didn’t do it. Every day, this site dies a little more.
They also said this in the last post…
“Enjoy, and we’ll see you next week.”
Sorry to see you guys fade, best of luck…
Liberace here. Time to play taps! hello, is anybody home?
No they have apparently fallen into a black hole.
still no activity Sunday January 19th 2014
@Tony:
Electric hammers? Easier to use than a regular hammer, but if you’re going to use power tools, why not just use a drill/screws or a dedicated nail gun?
With the advent of cordless nailguns from manufacturers like Ryobi and DeWalt, I see even less point in owning a autohammer, other than:
1. They cost a third as much as a cordless nailgun.
2. They can be used in very close quarters, where swinging even a regular hammer might be an issue.
WATCH THE DATE – THIS SITE IS DEAD
Hate to see this site go away. Been coming here a long time and always enjoyed it.
Poke poke poke…
Nup, still dead.
I keep checking back every day, hoping for the best. 🙁
I just found this site while shopping for a forging hammer. I’ll join the resuscitate the site club. I loved that axe video…hm, I think I’ll make an axe today, and I just happen to be able to do it. I’ll hope for the best just like the rest of you, and good luck and best wishes for the founders and the founderers.
I actually really enjoyed this video. Its one of those things that most people don’t ever really think about is how tools are constructed. regards!
I cannot for the life of me fathom what could have happened to the guys that caused this site to go zombie as it did.
Well, It’s been a year. I kept hoping that it would make a comeback. Finally removed it from my bookmarks.
Yup, happy anniversary.
Wow a whole year without an update. That’s impressive.
It truly is amazing I agree with you there. The sad part is that myself and others looked forward to checking this site each day. We shared a passion and it was a well run site with updates on a regular basis.
What gets me is that this wasn’t a 1 man show. There were a few people that contributed and helped with the site.
I just can’t seem to figure out 1 single scenario where they would be completely unable to put a couple sentences together and say “hey sorry for the lack of content. We are going through some stuff…. etc.”
It makes me mad because I know how easy that is to do as a web designer/developer.
Saddest part is that we all still check for updates. Somehow it is still not too late to get this going again. And if they wrote something here tomorrow saying sorry… or whatever we would all rejoice and say thank god you are still alive (I hope that is not the problem! that would be horrible).
Anyone want to start a tool blog site for all these loyal readers that don’t have a place like toolmonger any longer? 🙂
Try Toolguyd.com Not as many videos, but hey…they do reviews on tools….and well…they’re alive.
C
Thanks… I will check it out.
One scenario – they’re part of an experiment to see how long loyal fans will keep checking a defunct blog. 😉
Worst scenario – all the people involved were going out for drinks to celebrate this great blog, and got hit by a car.
I’ll keep checking occasionally, in the hope that it gets back on track, or that we get some word from them.
Toolmonger, the Mary Celeste of the internet.
Ok, thats it, off my bookmarks. Sad day.
This site may be “ghosting” for another year since the domain is registered until 2015-04-19 19:07:46.
Maybe they will be back soon… still checking 😉
Renewed for another year, now expires 19 April 2016…
Let’s see what happens in six months!
What a badass! I knew someone who would make swords, yet an axe is arguably far more practical!
