It’s Just Cool: Wood-cycle

I like to have a sense of accomplishment when I finish a project — a finely selected wood stain, or perhaps the nice turn of a table leg. Something to be proud of. The wood-cycle is something else again.
Hungarian Istvan Puskas poses with his wooden chopper in Tiszaors, 100 miles east of Budapest on Thursday. Puskas, a 52-year-old tractor driver, built his bike in two years from firewood.
Firewood ya’ll; that’s hardcore. Not only would I have never thought to do this I’d have never been able to carry it through with the sheer design issues Istvan here must have solved at close to every turn. I might worry a little if the thing gets hot and cracks or perhaps if he lays it over, but then again motorcycling isn’t for the faint of heart in the first place.

The best part is that wooden barrel gas tank. Wonder if it’s sealed only by the bands like a traditional wooden barrel.
A barrelmaker once told me a story about how initially wood barrels were used to transport crude oil. They always leaked because there was no water to make the wood swell up to make a tight seal. So I’d imagine the gas tank would have to be coated on the inside with tar or something.
That thing looks like it’s got 2-3″ of ground clearance….
