Dealmonger: $42 Orion Mortising Attachment
We’ve covered cheap mortising attachments here before, but this Orion mortising attachment at Woodcraft looks like it’s a much higher grade tool.
The Orion supposedly fits most drill presses with 2-5/8″, 2″, 1-7/8″, 1-1/2″ (think DP350) diameter quills. It features a micro adjustable fence which can hold work pieces up to 4-1/2″ thick. The mortising attachment also comes with hold down rods, a setup block, and 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, and 1/2″ chisels.
Woodcraft is also selling many other clearance items at 50% off. The sale is one week only — so assuming it they start their calendar week on Monday, you have only 5 – 7 days left to shop.

I forgot to post the price: $42 before shipping. That’s why I thought it was such a great deal
Let’s hope it’s better than Delta’s version. After years of frustration, I threw mine as far as I could into the woods behind my shop. I kept the square chisels, though.
With the plethora of different joining systems out there, why are people still stuck on half-assing mortises on a drill press? I mean, if you’ve got to have a mortise, do it with the router and round off the corners of the tenon! Otherwise, either dowel it or get a REAL mortiser.
Most drill presses are underpowered to perform a mortising cut. I agree with Dave that a router is much better or any other number of methods available to today’s wood workers.
Used dowels before I finally picked up a mortiser.
I’ve never talked to anyone who thought those DP mortising attachments were worth anything.
