Megabench: More Than Meets The Eye

The Make blog reports on a great set of Flickr photos showing how Jim (a.k.a. bondcliff) built a large bench in his new workshop. The picture above shows his Megabench, which he has divided into a “tool” side on the left, and a “nerd” side on the right. The nerd side includes his electronics and craft tools plus an old PC running Ubuntu. The tool side has your usual assortment of — surprise! — tools. There’s a nice shelf running above the entire length to help keep “clutter” off the benches. A series of outlets over the shelf also runs the length of the benches.
The surface for both benches is 3/4″ plywood with hardboard on top. The frame and legs are 2× material; 5/8″ carriage bolts attach the legs to the frames.
A well-planned and executed layout. Nicely done, Jim!

Nice, i love long workspaces, there is enough room for some projects, and the clutter that they provide……….
Shopmonger
Ahhh, the advantage of an unfinished basement! There are very few down here in the SE unless your house is on a hill and it has a walkout basement. I like the long bench.
Nice! I would like to point out that those look like 3/8″ bolts, not 5/8″ as stated.
Yep, like Eagle-eye Mike said, those clearly appear to be 5″ long 3/8″ carriage bolts. Very nice bench, clearly built with care and attention. Wish I had the room for that kind of length. One thing seems odd though; everything is soo nice and straight but for the shelf which appears to be slightly s-shaped (bowed). Having done the rest so well, it would be a shame to allow it to remain that way.
Off topic perhaps, but I’ve always wondered how do you keep bugs from nesting behind a perf board.
