Toolmonger Johnsen Frameworks posted this awesome tool to the Flickr pool, and it looks like a great way to hold an odd-shaped workpiece. Called the SEVO vise, it’s a Swedish-made device consisting of three plates — flat on one side and rounded on the other — each attached to a swivel point. By rotating the plates into various positions you can create almost infinite grip shapes.

Interesting in knowing more about the SEVO? Check out the link below to Johnsen Frameworks’ Flickr page where you’ll find scans of a number of articles about the vise, including one from a 1951 issue of Popular Science. And don’t be shy: Add pix of your own unusual and useful tools. We’ll be watching!

  3. I have this vise but mine has 4 swivel plates. Overall length is about 9″. The vise opens to 2.5″ at the base but only 2.25″ from plate to plate. There are 2 stacks of four plates on one end which all can be positioned separately and then locked into place. The are four larger plates on the opposite end that also swivel independently and then locked in place. All of the plates can also be moved forward or backward about an eighth of an inch to allow for extra support on complex parts and then can also be locked in place. I am looking to sell mine if anyone is interested. You can email me at adfintec@gmail.com .
