From the Flickr Pool: Building A Place To Chill

A few years ago I tried to ponder why folks seemed to make Adirondack chairs a favored woodworking project. Of course I lived in a small apartment with a 2×6 patio then as well. I later found that when there’s room for them, Adirondacks are fun to build and easy to enjoy — picture a Corona commercial.
This pair of cedar Adirondacks built by reader engmike8 is proof positive that Mike has his priorities in order. They are simple, clean and ready to go. May the hours of lounging in these fine chairs be many more than the hours building them, sir!

These will replace some cheap plastic adirondacks, they are stuck in my shop until all this snow and ice melt!
Nice! I noticed that reliable old HF has some similar looking adirondacks for about $40 and even a rocking one for $50. The HF versions are made of fir and are unfinished (I think you also have to put them together). Of course, they might make great full size patterns for your own wood!

These look a lot like the New Yankee Workshop design! I made 8 of these and some side tables earlier this year for my in-laws. It was a great project – I kept the jigs so I could make some for myself someday. The best thing about these chairs is the dimensions are extremely flexible since the joinery is so simple, so you don’t need to be an amazing woodworker or have great equipment to make them, and they’ll come out great even if you make a few mistakes. Here are my results:
