Preview: Gator Black Zirconium Sandpaper

By Sean O'Hara

A day spent sanding is a day spent in hell. Unfortunately I like my projects to come out looking good. Over the last few years we’ve spent hours upon hours “in the grit.” Gator products are normally what get stuck to the bottom of the sander or wrapped around a block. One of Gator’s newest creations is the Ultra Power paper with Black Zirconium.

What’s the big deal, right? Yeah, that’s what I thought as well, until we had some in the shop recently. Gator claims it sands three times faster and last three times as long. We can’t put numbers like that to it but we can say our projects move faster with the Zirconium-loaded discs, and we don’t switch them out as often. In our book that’s a win.

The new Ultra Power black Zirconium is available in 50, 80, 120 and 220 grit and will run you about the same couple of bucks as most other sandpaper.

    Hmm, Gator changed their logo.

I have been using Norton 3X discs and while they do last longer than the regular paper, they tend to sand at about the same rate as the regular ones. If these sand at a higher rate then I would be interested in switching.
