Blast From The Past

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Ever since I began shaving I’ve used the big-brand cartridge razors, until recently I had a revelation:  I hate spending money on overpriced razor cartridges.  My local knife store turned me on to the old-school pleasure of wet-shaving with a double-edge safety razor.  Blades cost 25 cents apiece — and there’s something cool about shaving the way my grandfather used to shave.

There are many options in razors — I use a vintage 1950s Gillette — but one of the best razors that balances cost and quality is the Merkur 33C safety razor.  It runs about $26 without blades. If you’re interested, check out Badger and Blade where you can find anything and everything related to shaving.

Kreg Klamp Table

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Kreg has created one of the leading systems for pocket joinery, and the Kreg Klamp table provides an assembly area specially designed for that purpose.  Klamp Blocks slide along the rails on two sides of the table and provide stops to rest your project against, and the Kreg Klamps keep your project resting against the blocks and hold joints in place while you assemble them.

A Fixed- And Adjustable-Angle T-Square

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Adjustable and accurate don’t have to be mutually exclusive when you talk about squares.  This adjustable-angle T-square from Bridge City Tool Works gives you both an accurate 90° angle and an adjustable angle in one beautiful and expensive package.

A Simple Arbor Press Modification

Friday, February 27th, 2009

I thought you’d like to see some pictures of how I tightened up this standard Enco ratcheting arbor press.  As it comes from Enco, the bolts in the front and the side press against the ram to tighten it up against the casting and prevent slop.  The problem is that it doesn’t work that well — it tends to be either too loose or too tight.

Matco 1/4″ Impact Wrench

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Matco Tools’ new mini impact driver will fit where larger impact wrenches won’t, and its light weight (under two pounds) means less fatigue.  With its 1/4″ drive and 5 to 30 foot-pounds of torque it’s designed with smaller fasteners in mind, and it spins up to 11,000 RPM so it won’t slow you down on large assembly projects.

The Week in Tools: Toolmonger Top 5

Friday, February 27th, 2009
tm-top5.jpg

It’s been a busy week here at Toolmonger.  If you’ve been spending time in the shop — you should! — and you haven’t had a chance to keep up with Toolmonger this week, we suggest you start with these posts, which our readers helped to select:

Get A Grip On Your Bed Liner
Do you find there’s never enough tie-downs or they’re never where you need ‘em when you’re securing a load in your truck bed?  With Liner Locks Cargo Clamps any ridge on your bed-liner can be a tie-down point. The adjustable serrated jaws of these imported clamps bite into the liner ridges when you tighten the eyebolts just a quarter turn.

4-in-1 Bucket Tool
I must love buckets — they’re all over my home, shop, and garden — but the ones missing their handles cut into my hand when fully loaded, and the new ones can be a pain to open.  Fortunately Prazi makes the 4-in-1 Bucket tool;  it can serve as a replacement handle, and it’ll also help you pry off those stubborn lids.

Stop The Snowplow From Chewing Up Your Yard
As the snow starts to melt, you notice that the snowplow driver took some liberty guessing where the road ended and your yard began.  Don’t be too hard on him — it’s pretty tough to tell at 2 in the morning.  Next time give him a break and mark your driveway or curb with a lighted solar driveway marker from SunForce.

Precision Machinist’s Gauge Blocks
Woodworkers have brass setup bars for precision setup — machinists have gauge blocks.  You stack a series of gauge blocks to match the desired measurement, for accurately checking and setting measurements and calibrating instruments.

Rope-Working Gloves
As a theater stage technician I handle hot light fixtures, heavy weights and set pieces, and ropes and rigging, so gloves are a must — after a day at the fly rail without ‘em, I’d be sorely sorry and rubbed raw. These SetWear Journeyman gloves feature tough, durable SureGrip panels on the palm and fingers, and they look like they’d do the trick.

Wavy-Edge Sanding Discs

Friday, February 27th, 2009

The edge of regular sanding discs can dig into your prized work, but New Wave sanding discs have wavy edges that curl over the side of the sanding pad, so the edge doesn’t come in contact with the workpiece.

Reese Solo Hitch

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

If you’re looking for a tool to save your marriage and/or your mind, this may be it. Have you ever been in the situation where you’re trying to line up your hitch with a trailer that’s too small to see in your mirrors?   If you don’t have a person who can back you up, you’ll end up jumping out of the cab a couple of times (at least) to get it right — unless you’ve got the Reese Solo Hitch.

Get In Touch With Your Brighter Side

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I saw this setup over at a friend’s house:  He has a lamp on his nightstand that’s situated so it’s a pain to turn on or off, but he rigged it with this Good Earth Lighting Kit so at the end of a long day he can dim it or turn it off, just by touching a 2″ touch-sensitive pad.

Rock Climber’s Hand Drill

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

You’re hundreds of feet above the ground or miles deep into a cave and you need to drill a hole in solid rock for an anchor — what are you going to use?  Petzl made the RocPec SDS drill holder for just these situations.

Bring Those Batteries Back From The Dead

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I’ve tried rechargeable batteries — mostly because I hate paying for new batteries all the time, and getting rid of the old ones — but I use the crap out of my batteries, and inevitably I wake up one day and those rechargeable batteries I shelled out for no longer hold a charge.  The La Crosse BC-900 promises to remedy that problem;  its refresh mode will bring those dead batteries back to life.

Manta III Core Drill Rig

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

If you need to drill a big hole in concrete, you’re probably looking at a core drill.  Not only do they make nice round holes, but you can reuse the core to fill the hole when you’re done doing whatever you needed to do on the other side of the concrete.  If you’re in a business like mud-jacking where you drill many holes a day, you could do worse than the Manta III Core Drill from MK Diamond.
