Flickr Pool: Wanna Joint?

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Reader Hmboo has access to one hell of a collection of joints. We’re hoping this is his shop for no other reason than to have access to a spread like this. Though it does look as if this is partially outdoors but that would still be ok with us.

Just judging from the joints I’m guessing this is a bunch of gear from tractors or heavy machinery like some kind of mechanical plant, but I could be way off on that.  Regardless, if all of it were shiny this image would almost qualify for tool pr0n.

Diamonds Are A Tool’s Best Friend

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Sharpening hand tools takes either skill and practice or expensive equipment.  And unless you’re going to recreate the bevel free-hand, setting up the guide also takes time.  M.Power designed their Precision Sharpening System (PSS1) to provide an easy and inexpensive way to quickly put the edge back on your tools.

Instead of running the tool across a diamond abrasive stone, M.Power’s PSS1 holds the tool stationary and you move the diamond stone across the cutting edge.  You can sharpen chisels and plane irons from 1/8″ to 2-1/2″ wide.

The Week in Tools: Toolmonger Top 5

Friday, December 26th, 2008
tm-top5.jpg

It’s been a busy week here at Toolmonger.  If you’ve been spending time in the shop — you should! — and you haven’t had a chance to keep up with Toolmonger this week, we suggest you start with these posts, which our readers helped to select:

Spend More Time Painting, Less Time Climbing
The Secure Tray paint tray clamps securely to the top of any stepladder so you don’t have to climb up and down the ladder to reload your roller.  Yes, we’ve had paint trays that attach to ladders for ages, but those trays usually just rested on the rungs of the ladder.  Plus, the Secure Tray’s airtight lid keeps your paint and roller fresh for hours.

TM’s 2008 Favorites: Elmer’s ProBond Wood Filler
Some foolish person might scoff at wood filler in a Top Ten list full of tools, but we’ve completed at least a dozen woodworking projects with Elmer’s ProBond filler this year and can honestly state for the record that our projects wouldn’t be the same without it.  The Elmer’s filler has become as much a part of our woodwork as a sander or circular saw.

Lock Up Your Switches
Quite a few products out there will prevent toggle switches from being turned on or off, but the SwitchGuard is the only one we found that allows you to easily operate the switch if need be.

Preview: Bosch’s New 4V Li-Ion Screwdriver
Sure, the new sub-compact driver class is sweet. But if all you really want is a screwdriver why should you be robbed of modern conveniences like a removable battery, comfy rubber grip, and sub-$100 price? Think of Bosch’s new 4V “Max” as the Lexus of cordless screwdrivers: It looks like a Mercedes, but it’s based on a cost-practical Toyota.

How-To: Build A Reindeer And Sleigh For $15
Many of the project sites we look at take a Julia Childs approach to their holiday wood projects — you know, using materials you don’t have, tools you can’t afford, and plans you couldn’t draw up even if you were a rocket scientist. So to combat this effect we put together a reindeer and accompanying sleigh that you can assemble with a few simple tools and under $15 worth of lumber — in under a day.

Help us choose next week’s Top 5!

We’d appreciate your help in choosing next week’s Top 5, which’ll be featured here, elsewhere, and in the podcast as well. While you’re reading TM this week, look out for the “Interesting Post” button at the bottom of the article:

interestingpost1.jpg

When you see an article that piques your interest, click the button once. You’ll return to the same page, but TM’s software’ll score your click for future reference. We’ll check in on the totals before selecting next week’s Top 5.

Xmas Loot: New Toy Box

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Before it makes its journey to my godson’s bedroom, I thought I’d take a quick picture to remind myself that, once, the toy box I built for him did indeed have all its pieces and hardware, including a childproof lid and safety hinge locks on the inside.

Ah, yes, it is a thing of beauty for at least a week, maybe two.  I’m figuring the tyke will completely destroy it in three to five years, but I could be mistaken.

Young boys in our family don’t treat their furniture gently.  I did try and prepare by building it like a tank, but I’m sure when confronted with the school of hard knocks it’ll suffer defeat.

Drill Guide Might Make A Wicked Hockey Puck

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

We’ve covered jigs for drilling perpendicular holes without a drill press here, here, and here.  Though it may not be as versatile, Gladstone’s simple and elegant solution requires no assembly, and there are no parts to lose.

Doh! Man Burns Down House Clearing Ice w/Blowtorch

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008
doh1.jpg

I realize that we’ve covered tools designed specifically to melt ice with propane, but this strikes me as one of those cases where one must apply one’s (not so) common sense. While propane may work wonders for melting ice in the middle of a concrete driveway, applying the same tool to a porch might lead to, um, disastrous results.

In this case WBZ channel 38 reports that a guy in New Bedford, CT was clearing ice from his porch with a torch connected to a 20-pound propane cylinder when he managed to light his home’s vinyl siding on fire. “The fire quickly spread into the building’s uninsulated exterior wall and then into the second and third-floor apartments,” WBZ reports. They go on to indicate that it took the efforts of 25 firefighters to put out the blaze.

This is something that always scared me when I lived in an apartment — that one of the other residents would do something like this.

(Thanks, 416style, for the totally unrelated CC-licensed photo.)

Picture Perfect

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Several things about this picture trouble me.  First and most obvious:  This guy is having tons more fun than I am.  Second, I nearly got whiplash doing a double take when I realized this is taking place in the courtyard of an actual castle.  I was already somewhat aware of that fact, but in this photo it really hits home.

The third thing that kills me:  Look at those tools!  I would kill somebody to have a go with those bad boys — not that my puny muscles would be able to swing those hammers for very long anyway.

Thanks to reader Hmboo for the sweet photo.

This Try Square Brought To You By The Letter ‘K’

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Crown’s multi-angle try square does more than just right angles — it lets you layout or check 90°, 60°, 45°, and 30° angles with the same tool.

Crown Tools, based in Sheffield, England, designed this K-shaped square based on traditional tools still used in Europe.  They make the handle from plantation-grown rosewood and the blade, facing plate, and pins from polished brass.

You can find Crown’s multi-angle try square on clearance right now at Hartville Tool for $36.

Preview: Hitachi’s Micro Lithium-Ion Series

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Hitachi announced today that they’re following up on their release (earlier this year) of a 10.8V li-ion-powered sub-compact drill/driver with a series of new tools to expand the line: a reciprocating saw, flashlight, and right-angle impact driver. They’ll hit shelves soon in two three-piece kits: one includes the drill/driver and impact driver, the other the drill/driver and recip. Both include the flashlight, two batteries, and a 40-minute charger.

The tools’ specs are as expected:

The CR10DL Micro Reciprocating Saw delivers a no-load speed of 0-2,700 strokes per minute (SPM) and accepts standard recip saw blades. It weighs 2.6 lbs.

The WH10DCL Micro Right Angle Impact Driver spins between 0-2,100 RPM and hammers at 0-3,400 beats per minute to deliver 265 in/lbs of torque.

The UB10DL Micro Flashlight features a 180-degree adjustable head that locks into eight positions. It’s only sold as a bare tool.

Look for these to show up in stores soon, and we’ll follow up with a hands-on down the line.

Dealmonger: WheelEzze Dressing Stick $8

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Northern Tool is selling the Milescraft WheelEzze grinding wheel dressing tool for $8.  Used to dress bench grinding wheels (you do dress your wheels, don’t you?), it’s a little less brutal than star wheel-type dressers.
